Flooding Closes Roads, Hampers Travel

Highways

    In an update Monday night, MassDOT officials said they expect major interstates to be free of water during the Tuesday morning commute, but commuters should still expect significant delays on local roads because of storm-related flooding.

  • EXPECT DELAYS AT ROUTE 128 EXIT 27B RAMP BECAUSE OF FLOODING.
  • CLOSURES NEAR ROUTE 2 NEAR ALEWIFE BECAUSE OF FLOODING: The exit ramp leading to the Alewife MBTA Station off Route 2 Eastbound is closed because of flooding and will likely remain closed during the morning commute. Additionally, Route 16 between Massachusetts Avenue and Route 2 in Arlington/Cambridge is currently closed due to flooding. Route 2 at Lake Street is restricted to one lane in either direction due to flooding. Expect these closures to affect the Tuesday morning commute. Alewife Station and the Alewife parking garage remain open despite flooding.
  • TOPSFIELD ROUTE 1 CLOSED IN BOTH DIRECTIONS -- RETAINING WALL FAILURE AND IPSWICH RIVER FLOODING: Route 1 closed in both directions in Topsfield north of the Danvers town line because of slope erosion/retaining wall failure. Additionally, the Ipswich River has overtopped roadway at Topsfield Fairgrounds.
  • SIX DCR ROADWAYS ARE CLOSED BECAUSE OF STORM-RELATED FLOODING: Mystic Valley Parkway in both directions between Main Street and Mystic Avenue in Winchester; Lynnfells Parkway in both directions between Tremont Street and Melrose Street in Melrose; sections of Furnace Brook Parkway in Quincy; Short Beach (Winthrop Parkway from Broadsound Avenue in Revere to Revere Street in Winthrop); a section of Morrissey Boulevard in Dorchester between Tolman and Conley streets near Tenean Beach; Morton Street in Dorchester between Harvard Street and the rotary at Casey Overpass (near the Forest Hills T stop).   • BILLERICA ROUTE 3A CLOSED AT SHAWSHEEN RIVER: Billerica, Route 3A at Shawsheen River (north of Cook St.) closed.
  • ROUTE 110, CHELMSFORD CLOSED: Route 110 Chelmsford is closed from Chelmsford Center to Hunt Road due to flooding of an adjacent brook that washed out 10-15 feet of roadway edge. Repairs will not be possible until the water recedes.
  • BRYANT AVE. RAMP OFF ROUTE 93SB IN MILTON CLOSED.
  • ROUTE 20 AT ROUTE 27 IN WAYLAN CLOSED BECAUSE OF SUDBURY RIVER FLOODING.
  • WASHINGTON ST IN WOBURN CLOSED AT SALEM STREET (Aberjona River).
  • ROUTE 28 IN ANDOVER CLOSED AT N. READING TOWN LINE.
  • ROUTE 28 SOUTHBOUND IN TEWKSBURY CLOSED AT SHAWSHEEN STREET.
  • ROUTE 16 IN HOLLISTON CLOSED.
  • ROUTE 9 IN WELLESLEY/NATICK CLOSED. Route 9 is closed in both directions between Weston Road in Wellesley and Oak Street in Natick due to flooding. The detour for Route 9 westbound is Weston Road to Beachwood Road to Overbrook Road back to Route 9. The detour for Route 9 eastbound is Route 27 to Route 135 to Weston Road back to Route 9

MBTA/Commuter Rail

  • Green Line: Due to a large sinkhole under the tracks between Chestnut Hill and Newton Center Station, buses will also take passengers between the Riverside and Reservoir Stations in both directions on the D branch.
  • Red Line: Buses will shuttle passengers between Ashmont and Fields Corner in Dorchester due to water over the tracks near Shawmut Station.
  • MBTA Buses: Routes 21, 31, 79, 134, 215, 230, 245, 350 and 351 are being rerouted because of local flooding conditions.
  • Commuter Rail: The Lowell Line is experiencing delays because of flooding at Wilmington Station, which is closed because of flooding. Several lines -- including Fitchburg, Worcester, and Lowell -- have speed restrictions in place due to track conditions, which increase the travel time. The entire length of the Worcester line is at a 40 mph speed restriction.

  • Acton: Storm drains backed up in at least one neighborhood, sending water into a homeowner's basement.
  • Amesbury: The town has received more than 11 inches of rain since this weekend, and expects an additional inch to two inches to fall today. Flooded residents can seek shelter at the Senior Center. For more information, contact the Emergency Operations Center at (978) 388-8161.

    The following roads and bridges were closed or had restricted lanes Monday because of flooding and downed trees:

    Restricted: Beacon Street, Market Street beyond Fern Avenue, Pleasant Valley Road from Buttonwood to the Merrimac town line

    Closed: Newton Road past the water treatment plant, Fern Avenue Bridge, Greenleaf Street at Park Pond, Birch Meadow Road at the bridge, Carriage Hill Road, Lake Attitash Way, Newton Road Upper Bridge near Tuxbury Pond Dam
  • Andover/North Reading: Route 28 at Ipswich River closed. Marland Place Assisted Living at 15 Stevens St. was evacuated because of 8 feet of water in the basement and a flooded parking lot. Residents were being picked up by relatives.
  • Arlington: Route 16 between Massachusetts Avenue and Route 2 is closed due to flooding.
  • Bedford: Gas and electrical service was shut down in several neighborhoods that were flooded by storm water. Police also closed down Washington Street, Hartwell Road, Railroad Avenue and Route 62 to the Burlington line because of flooding, and a submerged car was towed from the parking lot of the Stop & Shop at the Great Road Shopping Center. The grocery store is located near the inundated Shawsheen River.
  • Belmont: Belmont High School and nearby portions of the Wellington Elementary School were flooded by Clay Pit Pond. Both schools were closed Monday.
  • Beverly: A tree smashed through a garage, blocking Hillcrest Road in Beverly Farms for several hours Sunday.
  • Billerica: Route 3A was closed at the Shawsheen River, north of Cook Street (video). Police said several low-lying areas have been flooded, but no residents have been evacuated from their homes.
  • Boston: Morrissey Boulevard was closed in both directions between Tolman Street and Conley Street in Dorchester. Morton Street was also closed between Harvard Street and the Casey Overpass, near the Forest Hills MBTA stop.

    A municipal building at 1010 Massachusetts Ave. that houses several city agencies was closed Monday because of flooding in a power closet. The Boston Public Health Commission, Inspectional Services Department, Parks & Recreation Department and a daycare in the facility were all closed for the day.

    In East Boston, high winds tore open the roof of a Delta Airlines hangar at Logan International Airport Sunday afternoon.

    Residents in Roslindale reported minor flooding, and NSTAR said a circuit problem in West Roxbury knocked out power for a few hundred residents.

    MBTA -- Green Line: Due to a large sinkhole under the tracks between Chestnut Hill and Newton Center Station, buses will also take passengers between the Riverside and Reservoir Stations in both directions on the D branch. Officials described the sinkhole as approximately 12 feet deep and 50 feet long, spanning the entire width of the trackbed. Officials said the sinkhole continued to grow Monday night.

  • Braintree: Route 37 at Hancock Street closed due to flooding.
  • Cambridge: Route 16 between Massachusetts Avenue and Route 2 is closed due to flooding. The exit ramp leading to the Alewife MBTA Station off Route 2 eastbound is also closed.
  • Canton: The Bolivar dam collapsed Monday, sending water gushing into the street. Residents were evacuated from the Waterfall Estates apartment complex.
  • Chelmsford: Route 110 is closed from Chelmsford Center to Hunt Road due to flooding of an adjacent brook that washed out 10 to 15 feet of roadway edge. Repairs will not be possible until the water recedes.
  • East Bridgewater: Route 18 near Route 106 closed due to flooding.
  • Holbrook: Several businesses on South Street were forced to close because of pooling storm water. Police used a boat to evacuate people trapped in one of the buildings, but no homeowners have been evacuated.
  • Holliston: Route 16 was closed Monday.
  • Lincoln: The breakdown lane and one eastbound lane of Route 2 were closed at Lexington Road. The shoulder of the eastbound side of Route 2A was also closed at Brooks Road.
  • Marstons Mills: Two blades were blown off of a 60-foot wind turbine overnight Saturday, according to a Cape photographer. A section of the blades could be seen on the ground approximately 100 feet away.
  • Medford: Lawrence road was closed to vehicle traffic Monday between Governor's Avenue and Winthrop Street, but all other roads remain open.

    On Sunday, a black Honda sedan was trapped by flood water on South Border Road. The car was submerged up to the windows by Sunday evening. Public works crews were also reinforcing the Amelia Earhart Dam on the Mystic River with sandbags.
  • Melrose: Lynnfells Parkway was closed in both directions Monday between Tremont Street and Melrose Street.
  • Merrimac: The fire department advised homeowners that they do not have the resources to pump out backyards or basements. Officials said two homes lost heating service Monday because of flooding.
  • Middleton: Lane restrictions on Route 114 at Ipswich River; Route 114 near River Road closed westbound, 1 lane eastbound.
  • Milton: The Bryant Avenue ramp off of Route 93 southbound was closed Monday. Police have received scattered reports of tree limbs down and basements flooded by the rain.
  • Natick: Route 9 was shut down through the city in both directions Monday night. Commuters can expect significant delays and are advised to seek alternative routes of travel. Route 135 between Mill and Speen Street closed due to flooding. The Natick Police Department asked that commercial vehicles use Speen Street for north/south travel as alternative routes, such as Oak Street and Route 27, will present complicated maneuvering for larger vehicles attempting to return to traveling east or west.
  • Newton: Mayor Setti Warren declared a state of emergency Monday, according to WickedLocal Newton, citing flood damage or leaks at 11 schools and four city buildings. More than 400 requests for assistance from residents or businesses have been logged within the city.
  • Peabody: Streets along Peabody Square were closed Sunday, including Center Street, Foster Street and low-lying areas downtown.
  • Pocasset: High winds felled a 40-foot tree at the intersection of Barlows Landing and County roads at about 7:30 a.m. A large tree limb also crashed through a wooden sign on the lawn of St. John the Evangelist Church, although the building was not damaged.
  • Quincy: 14.5 million gallons of untreated sewage was dumped into Quincy Bay Monday because the storm threatened to back up the sewerage system and flood Houghs Neck, according to the Patriot Ledger.

    Furnace Brook Parkway, Quincy Shore Drive and several other roads were closed due to flooding, including the intersection at Ballou and Seymour streets.

    At least a dozen homes in West Quincy were evacuated Sunday, the Ledger reports, and firefighters used boats to rescue stranded homeowners on Sheldon Street and Alrick Road.
  • Revere:Winthrop Parkway was closed from Broadsount Avenue in Revere to Revere Street in Winthrop.
  • Rowley: I-95 ramp to eastbound Route 133 closed due to flooding on Haverhill Street (Route 133)
  • Swampscott: A decades-old pine tree tumbled to the ground outside of a uLocal user's house overnight Saturday. The 60-foot tree missed the house and cars in the driveway.
  • Tewksbury: Route 28 southbound was closed at Shawsheen Street. Route 38 at Shawsheen (north of Wilmington town line) closed
  • Topsfield: Both sides of Route 1 remained closed Monday because of flooding from the Ipswich River. Mudslides continued as crews from the Massachusetts Highway Department worked to clean up the road. Highway officials expect the road will be closed for several days. Roads near the Topsfield Fairgrounds were also flooded by the river.
  • Waltham (video): Heavy rains caused significant flooding in several portions of town. Firefighters called in a John Deere tractor to evacuate residents from an apartment complex on Linden Street who were stranded by high flood waters. Motorists also reported that the intersection of Totten Pond Road and Winter Street was impassable.
  • Wayland: Route 20 was closed at Route 27 Monday because of flooding from the Sudbury River. Likely to be impacted/closed for several days.
  • Wilmington: One travel lane of Route 38 south closed south of Route 62.
  • Winchester (photos): The reservoir was overflowing Monday afternoon, causing road closures at Forest Street and Highland Avenue. Flooding was also reported on Lake Street, Cross Street, Skillings Road, Main Road, Brookside Avenue and Shore Road.

    Mystic Valley Parkway was closed in both directions between Main Street and Mystic Avenue.

    Workers moved trucks out of the DPW facility on Lake Street Sunday after the facility flooded. Several homeowners report basement flooding in the town as well.
  • Winthrop:Winthrop Parkway was closed from Broadsount Avenue in Revere to Revere Street in Winthrop
  • Wellesley: Route 9 was closed Monday night between Weston Road and Oak Street in Natick.
  • Woburn: Washington Street was closed at Salem Street because of flooding from the Aberjona River. Salem Street also closed. Storm waters swamped several areas of town, including a Stop & Shop parking lot near Route 38 and the intersection of Russel Road and Cambridge Street. A car was towed from the grocery store lot after the driver ignored sawhorses and became stuck in the water Sunday.
