Snow, sleet and freezing rain are making for a messy day in Massachusetts Wednesday as another storm moves across the region.

A winter storm warning remains in effect until 7 a.m. Thursday. Forecasters said that the combination of snow, sleet and significant icing may result in isolated downed trees and power outages.

Sleet Makes For Difficult Commute | Residents Concerned About Power

Freezing rain will be the dominant precipitation through most of the day Wednesday, and the precipitation is expected to change back to light snow at night.

In Hopkinton, ice accumulation forced some power lines to fall in the town, but no major power outages were reported as of noon.

Lunenburg, one of the most affected communities last month, set up an emergency operations center to deal with any problems that may crop up as a result of the wintry mix. Some of the residents in these communities have only recently gotten power back after December's crippling ice storm.

"After the last Dec. 11 ice storm. We are all set with the ice. We are waiting for the power to go out, so we are all keeping our fingers crossed," said Kelly Jennison, of Fitchburg.

Unitil crews restored power to about 50 customers in the Fitchburg area on Wednesday morning. The scattered outages resulted from icing conditions, the company said.

Road crews were out early treating roads with sand as freezing rain comes down on top of the snow that's coating the roads. Along the Route 2 corridor, plow trucks were busy trying to deal with slippery surfaces.

"It was sleet here just a little while ago and now it's turning a little back to snow. It's bouncing back and forth right here," said plow operator Wally Wesinger.

He said the wintry mix "doesn't even compare" to the Dec. 11 storm in which one in five residents lost power for at least a week.

Along the Massachusetts Turnpike in Westborough, snow was turning to slush, but the highway was still in fair shape. Many of the side streets, which were clogged with snow and ice, triggered about 390 closings and delays across the Bay State.

At least a half-dozen car accidents were recorded along state roads by 6 a.m., but no major power outages were reported.
