BOSTON -- Where does Route 128 end?Starting in the late 1940s, Route 128 ran all the way from Gloucester to the split in Braintree. Then in 1989, the state redesignated the numbers and ended 128 in Canton at the Interstate 95 interchange. A highway sign was installed in Canton saying "End 128."But locals, traffic reporters and the media never made the change and continued referring to that section of road as 128.
It was never seriously considered as a significant issue because it had always been called 128 -- everyone who lived here called it that, and everyone knew what we were talking about. But now 18 years after the change, there is confusion.New residents have moved to the area and along with a generation of new drivers learned the roads by looking at highway signs and maps with the new designation of Interstate 93.Online mapping services, which are the way more and more people are getting directions, call it I-93. On-board navigation systems, which most new cars offer, call it I-93.Click Here to take our online survey to help us decide what to call it on television. There are three options.
SmartRoutes
- Have Traffic Reporters make the change to call that section of road 93, rather than 128.
- Don't change anything. There's no problem.
- The state should revert back to the original designation, extending 128 all the way to Braintree.
