Wednesday, July 12: Site Helps Seafood Lovers Choose Healthier Fish

Before you head to the grocery store to buy fish, here's a Web site that will help you choose seafood that's healthy for you and the environment.

Log onto Monterey Bay Aquarium's Web site to download printable pocket guides. There are specific guides for different parts of the country. They have information about the items most commonly found in each area's market places.

You can also browse the site's Seafood Guide to find information about a specific fish. In the Northeast, you might want to stay away from imported swordfish because of high mercury levels. As an alternative try Mahi Mahi or Pacific Halibut.

If you are buying shrimp, opt for wild-caught cocktail shrimp instead of imported black tiger shrimp. There are some environmental concerns with the way they are caught and farmed.
