Site Helps Service Members Keep Military Mascots

While U.S. troops serve overseas, some units have adopted dogs and cats -- mascots that have become an important form of support for soldiers who are far from home.

MilitaryMascots.org sends care packages and helps bring the soldiers' dogs back to the United States. The site provides veterinarian and Humane Society contacts overseas and helps service members bring the military pets home prior to their deployment.

The dogs and cats have to be quarantined before they are allowed to be sent home. Then, they are quarantined for another period of time once they reach the U.S. to make sure they are disease-free.

The organization is looking for support from veterinarians and donations to help transport the animals. There's an application online if you'd like to give a dog or cat a foster home until the troops return.
