BOSTON -- You've asked for more information about the choices and newest trends to consider when planning a fitness program for yourself that includes the basic components of exercise: aerobic exercise, strength training and flexibility and balance training.Today's focus is on Aerobic Exercise. There are many options -- some that you can do alone, or with a workout partner, and some that include classes. Remember, these are the workouts that make your heart and lungs work. They also help you burn extra calories, so if weight loss, or even holding the line, is your goal, get busy huffing and puffing!Activities that can give you a great aerobic workout on your own include walking, jogging, cycling, and swimming. Of course walking and jogging can be done outdoors, in your own neighborhood, or even in malls, if you choose to work indoors. There are organized walking groups in some area malls, so check to see if any of these are scheduled in your community. Most fitness facilities have a variety of cardiovascular equipment choices. They challenge you, keep you cross-training, and prevent you from being bored or "bogged down" with the same routine over and over. Treadmills, stationary bicycles (either upright or recumbent), rowing machines, elliptical machines, stair-climbing machines are among the choices. Some of these are basic with manual controls, but most offer computerized programs, the opportunity to watch TV, wear headphones for music, and even read while doing your workout. LCD screens are bigger and better than ever and are designed to entertain you while you work your way to fitness!Classes can be fun, offering socialization and a great aerobic workout at the same time. Some of these that have been around for many years include programs like Jazzercise, step aerobics, aqua classes, and high/low impact cardio workouts, to name a few. A big trend that is appearing, or re-appearing, across the county are classes that focus on dance, dance, and dance some more -- these are cardio and expressive at the same time, and bring with them an element of fun and creativity. Also popular are theme classes (“Country”, “60’s”, “Disco”, etc.). And of course, there are still cardio hybrid classes that combine aerobic work with body toning or other elements of fitness. So, what's the bottom line? What's the best? First, decide if you like to exercise alone, or in a class. Perhaps a combination will keep you from getting bored. There are many opportunities to participate in classes through your local fitness facilities and gyms, and community and recreation centers. Check them out, have fun, and enjoy the benefit of having stronger lungs and heart!
