BOSTON -- Shiba Russell is co-anchor of WCVB-TV NewsCenter 5’s weekend EyeOpener newscasts. She also serves as a general assignment reporter for the station.
Russell joined WCVB-TV Channel 5 in 2006 and has contributed significantly to stories that have earned the station the prestigious Edward R. Murrow, National Headliner and New England Emmy Awards. In 2009, Russell and two colleagues were awarded a National Headliner Award in the breaking news category for their coverage of a seven-alarm fire that destroyed an entire city block in Lawrence, MA.Prior to joining WCVB, Russell was weekend evening anchor and general assignment reporter at WTAE-TV, the ABC affiliate in Pittsburgh, also of Hearst Stations Inc. At WTAE, she also contributed to stories that won the Edward R. Murrow and National Headliner Awards.Previously, Russell worked at News 12 The Bronx as weekend evening anchor and one-man-band reporter. She also worked as a reporter, photographer and fill-in announcer for Neighborhood News 12 in Long Island, New York. Russell's special series on group homes for mentally disabled adults won her an award from the New York State Association for Retarded Children in 1999.Born in Boston, Russell was raised in New Jersey. She is a magna cum laude graduate of the College of New Rochelle and holds a Master of Science Degree from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism.
