The technical intern program includes actual "hands on" operation of equipment under the close supervision of Engineering Management, as well as under the observation of permanent technician staff members. The training is for the benefit of the interns and would be similar to that given in a vocational/technical school.

The internship program lasts 12 weeks. Each intern spends one week in the following areas to gain an overview of the 10 technical areas of the station:

  • Production
  • Master Control & Technical Area
  • Video Tape Room
  • Off-Line Edit Suite
  • On-Line Edit Suite
  • Remote Van
  • Satellite News Gathering
  • Electronic Field Production
  • News Editing/Receiving/Playback Area
  • Management Office
  • After completing a week in each of the above areas, the final two weeks of the program will be designated for students to return to their areas of choice in order to gain additional training.

    Supervision:

Each intern will be supervised by the engineering supervisor, who will oversee their progress and conduct weekly review meetings at the end of each assignment and as the student begins new assignments.

    Equipment Use:

As the purpose of the internship is to gain training in the technical area, students will be allowed to train on the technical equipment. Use of the equipment will be limited and closely supervised.

    Employment Conditions:

As in our existing intern program, interns do not displace regular employees. Furthermore, in the Technical Intern Program the student would not be scheduled to cover an operating shift. Additionally, as dictated in the Fair Labor Standards Act, in no way does participation in the program guarantee future employment to the student. However, exceptional graduating interns may be considered as candidates in the summer relief technician pool.

    Criteria:

Students must be at least in their junior year and must major in Mass Communications or Engineering. Students may work one semester and must earn college credit.
