Ed Harding Meets This Week's A + Student

This week's A Plus student is Everett High School senior Mike Gallagher, who spends most of his day giving to others, and it is only when he sits down to dinner when he starts spending time on himself.

NewsCenter 5's Ed Harding reported that every day around seventh period, Gallagher leaves his high school to go to a tutoring session across Broadway Avenue at Parlin's School.

"Every day -- rain, snow, sleet, " said Gallagher.

Every year, Gallagher tutors a different student. This year he is helping a second-grader from Miss Auger's class.

Gallagher reads an Arthur book to a second grade class at Parlin's School.

"It's tutoring, and being a big brother. It helps just being there," said Gallagher.

After reading to the entire class, he works one on one with Justin Johnson, 7.

"If it helps him, it helps me," said Gallagher.

"(He) helps me write stuff, and think about stuff," said Johnson. "He could be my big brother."

Gallagher is a straight A student, a member of the National Honor Society, in the top 10 in his class academically, and he carries a 4.42 GPA.

But his tutoring sets him apart.

"What he does is set a model," said Parlin's School's principal, Thomas Gibson.
