ANDOVER, Mass. -- Each week, NewsCenter 5 presents a high school senior who has taken the lessons of the classroom and applied them to life.
This week's A Plus student is Andover High School's Pat Twomey, who scored perfect on the math portion of his SATs.Twomey's Andover High School classmates make a big deal of his score, but that is OK with him."The mathematics program and all the academic programs are so strong at this school," said Twomey.Twomey scored a 1540 on his SATs with a perfect 800 on the math portion of the test.He is vice president of his school's National Honor Society and severe asthma and all, he turns shots away as the goalie of the school soccer team."Logical reasoning and stuff. I am really good at it, a mathematical mind," said Twomey."He learns for learning's sake. He questions because he wants to understand. It's not about the grade, it is about understanding the material," said Twomey's chemistry teacher, Leo LaFond. If someone needs help, he is there, and if he needs further stimulus, the school is there for him."This spring I am going to be taking a course at the school with Prof. Cummings from UMass Lowell in Calculus III. So, if you want to advance in mathematics, the school let's you do it," said Twomey. If you know a special student who truly makes a difference in his or her classroom, please e-mail us your nomination. Please include your phone number.
