Coleen Marren, News Director

Coleen Marren has served as the News Director at Hearst-Argyle’s WCVB-TV since August 2000.

Under her leadership, the station has been recognized with more than three-dozen prestigious national and regional awards.

With Marren at the helm, WCVB has been honored with three national Gabriel Awards for “Television Station of the Year,” “News Station of the Year” from the Associated Press and five Edward R. Murrow Awards for Best Newscast and Continuing Coverage of high-profile local news stories.

During Marren’s tenure, the news department launched weekend morning newscasts and Team 5 Investigates, the largest television investigative unit in New England.

The May 2003 issue of Boston Magazine dubbed Marren one of Boston’s 10 most powerful women. She currently serves as the RTNDA Region 10 Director, an elected position serving all of New England. Currently Marren is working with other Massachusetts journalists to secure a shield law.

Prior to joining WCVB, Marren was the News Director at Hearst-Argyle’s WISN-TV in Milwaukee. She was also the Vice President/News Director of Boston’s WFXT-TV, the FOX owned and operated station from 1996 through 1999. She was hired by FOX to launch the newscast in 1996 and handled all the design, set, overall look and content. The newscast received six Emmy Awards in the first four months of operation, including set design, music, lighting and graphics. After one full-year, the Associated Press honored the newscast as the best newscast in New England.

Previously, Marren served as News Director at WTIC-TV in Hartford. She has also worked as Managing Editor at WTNH-TV, New Haven. In Chicago, Marren served as Special Projects Producer at WBBM-TV and as News Assignment Editor, Field Producer and Planning Editor at WLS-TV. She also worked for ABC NEWS in the Chicago bureau as Assignment Editor.

Marren is a popular speaker on college campuses including Harvard University, Emerson College, Boston University and Quinnipiac University. She is a nationally recognized expert on freedom of information issues and has been quoted in national trade publications.

Marren attended Carleton University in Ottawa for graduate studies in journalism. She holds a Journalism Occupational Certificate from Los Angeles Valley College and a B.S. degree in English and Theatre from Central Connecticut University.
