BOSTON -- Across the country communities are preparing for the 2010 U.S. Census. How prepared are we in the commonwealth?Consider this a call to action – a thorough count of our population is important to EVERYONE in Massachusetts. Let's be clear: Accurate numbers should be a priority for local and state government, commercial businesses regardless of size, non-profits and community groups including unions and churches.Population and the accompanying demographics have a direct impact on the allocation of billions in federal dollars – from education and transportation grants to stimulus money. This is true for both non- and for-profit organizations. With one, and possibly two, U.S. Congressional seats at stake, Massachusetts could also lose representation and clout if our population shrinks further. It is very disturbing that in the 2000 Census, 4 out of 10 Bostonians did NOT return the Census mail-in survey. While we are encouraged by some local efforts to raise awareness on a grass-roots level, we are calling for a comprehensive Massachusetts campaign to educate the public on the importance of the 2010 Census. Immigrant groups threatening a boycott must be convinced otherwise. Those who are here illegally must be assured that there are no questions about legal status. It is important to note that the US Census staff must take a legally binding oath never to disclose individual responses to any outside organization, including other government agencies. So there is no excuse -- it is time for each of us to stand up and be counted!
