BOSTON -- Three clear-cut issues jumped out this week.

The first -- even though Beacon Hill is reeling from massive deficits, why cut $750,000 to fund AmeriCorps and risk losing $20 million from the federal government? It would be a particular shame for the Bay State not to support this extraordinary source for programs and volunteer jobs, especially since Sen. Ted Kennedy champions it nationally.

The second issue -- How many more tragic accidents involving elderly drivers must there be before the Commonwealth passes a law to protect everyone -- including the elderly driver? Why do we have stronger laws for teenage drivers than for the elderly? For one obvious reason: teenagers cannot vote; politicians are clearly beholding to those who control their fate. Enough said -- something must be done.

And finally, the tide is turning for charter schools after years of restrictive bans, funding caps and threats from school committees and teachers' unions. Just how many studies and community testimonials did it take? With Governor Patrick and Mayor Menino at last on the proverbial bandwagon, lawmakers must act now to support what is clearly working in public schools.
