The fourth annual live, one-hour concert, Raising the Roof: Celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. in Song will be presented on Monday, Jan. 19 by WCVB-TV/DT Channel 5 and the Boston Children's Chorus.

Celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. In Song

The program will broadcast live at 7 p.m. from the New England Conservatory of Music's prestigious Jordan Hall, where Dr. King first met his wife, Coretta.

The concert, sponsored in part by State Street Corporation, honors the life and work of the late civil rights activist and marks the first time that a children’s choral concert will air on major television stations celebrating Dr. King’s holiday. This year the concert will be syndicated on major stations representing more than 80 percent of the country, including Hearst-Argyle Television stations.

The Boston Children’s Chorus, under the direction of Anthony Trecek-King, will be joined by the talented young voices of Young People’s Chorus of New York City with Director Francisco Nunez. Musical selections, ranging from spirituals to current popular songs, will reflect the struggle for freedom and peaceful acceptance. Academy Award-winning actor Louis Gossett, Jr. will perform inspirational readings to commemorate the day.

In addition to his many acting awards, Gossett is the founder of Eracism Foundation, an organization that seeks to promote education and awareness of racism, ignorance and social apathy.

The program will be produced by Stella Gould and directed by Dorothy Will. Elizabeth Cheng is the Executive Producer, and Bill Fine is the President and General Manager of WCVB. Both Gould and Cheng have been nominated for National Primetime Emmy Awards for their work on "Pops Goes the Fourth" on A&E.
