Saying, "It’s been a magnificent experience," Jim Boyd, one of Boston’s best-known and respected journalists, Friday announced his plans to retire from WCVB-TV/DT Channel 5 at the end of the year.

Colleagues Say Good-Bye To Jim Boyd

Boyd has been part of the WCVB family since before the station went on the air in March 1972. Initially hired for the launch of Channel 5, he has had many roles during his tenure. Boyd spent much of his time as an anchor, beginning with "Third World," WCVB's first minority public affairs program, now known as "CityLine." He has also co-anchored NewsCenter 5’s Weekend, EyeOpener and Midday newscasts.

In his impressive career, Boyd has reported on thousands of stories as a general assignment reporter and special correspondent. His assignments covered the entire spectrum including spot news, human interest, sports and politics.

Of his future plans, Boyd said, "I see this less as a retirement and more as a transition. I plan to remain intimately involved in the local community and explore interests that the demands of a full-time career didn’t allow."

He continued, "As I said to my friends at the station, it’s been a tremendous ride and a privilege to have been part of this organization and community for the past 37 years."

WCVB President and General Manager Bill Fine, in paying tribute to Boyd, said, "I have known Jim since 1982 and have always admired his work ethic, professionalism and sense of duty to his craft and the Boston market. He is a true gentleman, a solid journalist and a leader in the newsroom. Jim has always enjoyed a real connection with our viewers. His presence on and off air will be missed."
