Gerry Wardwell, Assistant News Director

Gerry Wardwell was named Assistant News Director at WCVB-TV/DT Channel 5 in March of 2008. Wardwell had been Managing Editor at WCVB the previous eight years. He first joined the station in 1998 as Executive Producer.

During his tenure as a leader in WCVB’s newsroom, the station has been lauded with more than 80 awards, including Associated Press Station of the Year honors multiple times. WCVB has also been recognized for best newscasts and breaking news from organizations including the RTNDA Edward R. Murrow Awards and the National Headliner Awards.

Prior to WCVB, Wardwell was the Executive Producer at WHDH-TV, Chanel 7. He created the station’s morning newscast in 1994.

Wardwell got his start in the industry with brief reporting stints in radio at WGBH in Boston and WOKW-AM in Brockton.

He then launched his television career at CNN in Atlanta.

He has also held reporter positions at stations in Georgia, Nebraska, and Manchester, New Hampshire (WMUR-TV). Wardwell produced newscasts in Providence, Rhode Island (WJAR-TV) and Miami, Florida (WSVN-TV) where he was promoted to Executive Producer before his move back to Massachusetts.

A graduate of Emerson College, Wardwell was born in Framingham and raised in Bristol, Conn. He now lives in the Boston area with his wife and two young children.
