BOSTON -- The American Women in Radio and Television (AWRT) announced WCVB-TV/DT Channel 5 has won two prestigious Gracie Allen Awards."Kelley’s Story" won in the Outstanding Series category and Executive Producer Jennifer Berryman was recognized for Individual Achievement, Producer -- News Series or Special for "Every Woman’s Risk."When WCVB reporter Kelley Tuthill was diagnosed with cancer at thirty-six, the mother of two young daughters chose to share her story with others. Throughout her journey from surgery to chemotherapy to radiation, Tuthill created video diaries, "Kelley's Story," that aired in Channel 5 newscasts and on TheBostonChannel.com and showed a frank, real look at life with cancer. The series was produced by Tuthill and Jennifer Berryman. Steve Colvin was the primary photographer and Barry Mullin was the editor.In October the station launched a station-wide initiative, "Every Woman’s Risk." The week-long series included stories in every newscast and features in Chronicle, CityLine and TheBostonChannel.com. Stories examined a variety of aspects from environmental risks, genetic testing and racial inequities to life after cancer and the scientific "next big things." Produced by Berryman and Tuthill, the series included stories by WCVB medical editor Dr. Timothy Johnson, reporters Tuthill and Janet Wu, photographer Steve Colvin and editors Barry Mullin and Raymond Smith.WCVB News Director Coleen Marren said, "Our entire news team has done an amazing job in the past year raising awareness about breast cancer and sharing Kelley’s courageous story. It's wonderful the AWRT is recognizing them for a job well done."The awards will be presented at the Gracie Allen Awards Luncheon on Thursday, May 29 at Tavern on the Green in New York.
