BOSTON -- Bianca de la Garza was named co-anchor of WCVB-TV/DT Channel 5's EyeOpener newscast in February 2008. De la Garza began reporting for WCVB in July 2007.
The award winning, Emmy nominated anchor and reporter brings more than a decade of experience to WCVB. Prior to joining the station, de la Garza spent six years at WFXT-TV as a weekend anchor and reporter. She has reported on major local and international stories from the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the trial of "shoe bomber" Richard Reid and the Rhode Island nightclub tragedy. At the height of the church abuse scandal, she traveled to Vatican City to cover the resignation of Bernard Cardinal Law. De la Garza was live at UN headquarters as Colin Powell made the case of ‘weapons of mass destruction’ in Iraq.De la Garza’s investigation on environmental terrorism in New England earned her an Emmy nomination. She's also received multiple Emmy nominations for anchoring. A versatile reporter, de la Garza has covered major Hollywood red carpet events and national sporting events. She reported live from the field in Jacksonville, Fla., and New Orleans for two of the New England Patriots Super Bowl wins.Before returning home to the Bay State, de la Garza was a reporter for KGTV, the ABC affiliate in San Diego. There she earned a San Diego Press Club award for her investigative report that uncovered and closed an illegal sweatshop operating in a busy city neighborhood. She traveled extensively along the borders of California, Arizona and Mexico exposing the Border Patrol Agency wasting of taxpayer dollars. De la Garza reported on a multitude of immigration issues including interviewing human smugglers in Tijuana, Mexico. She covered earthquakes and wildfires that caused catastrophic damage to residents of southern California and was live on-the-scene in Ventura County when an Alaska Airline plane crashed off Port Hueme.De la Garza began her broadcast journalism career as a reporter and anchor at WTEN, the ABC affiliate in Albany, N.Y. She covered everything from political news at the state capital to events in western Massachusetts, including the tornado that ripped through Great Barrington, leaving a path of destruction through the Berkshires.A Massachusetts native who grew up on the South Shore, de la Garza is a graduate of Emerson College. She is on the Board of Governors for the New England chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
