BOSTON -- One year from now, a revolution in television viewing will occur -- the transition from analog to digital transmission. The switch to digital on February 17, 2009, represents the most significant advancement in television technology since color.Nearly every device we use today -- including cell phones and music players -- is digital. The benefits of high definition or HD? Crystal clear pictures, CD quality sound and more program choices with additional digital channels. Most television stations in the U.S., including WCVB/DT, are already broadcasting in high definition. But according to a new survey from Consumer Reports National Research Center, 36 percent of Americans have not seen, read or heard anything about the digital transition.Although viewers "in the dark" tend to be the elderly and the disadvantaged, nearly everyone is confused. So let's simplify. Consider these options to make the transition:Purchase a DTV converter box that will adapt the digital signal to existing analog sets that use an antenna. A limited number of government-sponsored coupons are available to help pay for converter boxes.Buy a new television set with a built-in digital tuner or subscribe to a cable, satellite or telephone service provider. Plan now for which option works best for you.For more information, on our Web site, click on "Countdown to Digital" or watch our Digital Truth Reports throughout the year on Newscenter 5.
