Diamondbacks Try To Play Spoiler To Desperate Dodgers
(Sports Network) - The Los Angeles Dodgers hope to rebound from a big loss when they battle the Arizona Diamondbacks in the finale of a three-game series at Chavez Ravine.The Dodgers' setback to Arizona on Saturday allowed Philadelphia to gain a half-game edge over LA in the NL wild card standings. The Phillies had beaten the Florida Marlins earlier in the day. Not only did the Dodgers fall into second place in the wild card standings, but they also dropped to 1 1/2 games in back of the Padres for first in the NL West. San Diego topped Pittsburgh, 2-1, Saturday night. Arizona earned a 9-3 victory in Saturday's game behind eight strong innings from Miguel Batista. Carlos Quentin belted a two-run homer to lead the Diamondbacks' offense. Eric Byrnes had four hits and drove in two runs for the Diamondbacks, who had 17 hits and rebounded to take the middle contest of the series following a 2-0 loss Friday. Batista (11-7) won for the first time since August 9 against San Francisco. The right-hander had been 0-2 over his previous seven outings, but on Saturday he limited the Dodgers to six hits and three runs. He is 3-0 against Los Angeles this year. Brad Penny (16-9) was saddled with the defeat after surrendering nine hits and five runs -- four earned -- over five innings. J.D. Drew had three hits and Nomar Garciaparra stroked a two-run double in the first inning for the Dodgers. The Diamondbacks will send Livan Hernandez to the bump this afternoon. Hernandez had won consecutive starts before losing Tuesday in San Diego. He surrendered five runs and five hits in five innings against the Padres. The setback dropped Hernandez to 3-5 in eight starts since coming over in a trade with Washington. The native of Villa Clara, Cuba has struggled in 23 career starts against the Dodgers, going 7-12 with a 4.67 ERA. Taiwanese left-hander Hong-Chih Kuo will try to bounce back from a rough outing when he gets the call for the Dodgers today. Kuo made his third career start Tuesday versus Pittsburgh and was handed a loss after giving up five runs in 5 1/3 innings. He did strike out eight batters while walking two. This will be Kuo's first-ever start against Arizona. The 25-year-old is 0-1 with a 5.19 ERA in seven relief appearances versus the D-backs. Los Angeles is 9-8 against the Diamondbacks this season, including a 6-2 mark at Dodger Stadium.
