(Sports Network) - Matt Kenseth won Sunday's GFS Marketplace 400 at the Michigan International Speedway. The No.17 Roush Racing Ford crossed the finish line 0.622 seconds ahead of Jeff Gordon.

The victory was Kenseth's third of the season and 13th of his Nextel Cup career.

"I was trying to save it (the car) for the end and I had just enough," said Kenseth. "I'm so proud to be part of the team."

Pole winner Jeff Burton brought the 43-car field to the green flag for 200 laps of high-speed racing. On the opening lap, series points leader Jimmie Johnson suffered a right-front flat and he quickly fell to the back of the field down one lap to the leaders.

More problems as Robby Gordon slammed the wall on lap five and it brought out the first caution flag of the day. The well-timed yellow flag earned Johnson the "Lucky Dog" pass and put him back on the lead lap.

Up front, Ryan Newman passed Burton for the lead during the first lap and kept it through lap eight.

Burton pulled down to the bottom of the track on lap 17 telling his pit crew that he thought he lost a cylinder. The hood went up, but repairs were not possible. It was his first DNF (did not finish) since Talladega last October.

Kenseth held the lead on lap 22 when Kevin Harvick, last week's winner at The Glen, tried to slip underneath him for the lead. The No.29 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet was in the middle of the turn when the rear end got loose and Harvick went for a spin through the infield.

Jamie McMurray took a turn leading the way and garnering a five-point bonus. Then Kyle Busch and Dale Earnhardt Jr. climbed to the top as the lead kept changing hands.

Kyle Busch seemed to have a tire problem on lap 41 and on the next lap he slammed the outside wall. He was the fourth top-10 driver to suffer early problems.

"I think the right-front tire was going down because I went into the corner at it just didn't turn," said Busch.

Through 60 of 200 laps Carl Edwards led Jeff Gordon and Kurt Busch as the lead continued to rotate among the top drivers. There had already been 10 different leaders and 13 lead changes.

Kurt Busch began to fade and "Junior" reappeared at the front joining Edwards and Jeff Gordon at the top of the charts. Earnhardt Jr. fought his way past Gordon, but in the meantime, Edwards opened up a 1.811-second lead at the 75- lap mark. Also of note was Johnson cracking the top-20 as he rebounded from his earlier tire problem.

Earnhardt Jr. began to eat into Edwards' lead and caught him at lap 84. The two had an incident on Saturday in the Busch Series race when Earnhardt Jr. knocked Edwards into the infield with two laps to go, so they were very careful with each other as the No.8 Chevrolet took the lead on the next lap.

Earnhardt Jr. was cruising around the track when he came up on Kevin Lepage and suddenly he almost lost it. He slowed to gather himself and as he did, Edwards zoomed past him for the lead.

Edwards pitted on lap 96 and as the field passed the halfway mark, it was Earnhardt Jr. leading the way once again. The field completed its green-flag pit stops and Jeff Gordon emerged as the leader ahead of Edwards and "Junior."

When a caution flag came out on lap 115 due to a Kurt Busch spin, Gordon and Edwards made a quick stop on pit road to top off their tanks. That meant that they could definitely make the 200-lap distance on just one more stop. They returned to the track in 12th and 14th place, respectively. It also left Earnhardt Jr. on top with 83 laps to go.

Johnson cracked the top-10 after the stop and another challenger emerged in the No.20 Home Depot Chevrolet. Stewart took over third place on lap 123 and was the fastest car on the track.

Kenseth pulled side-by-side with Earnhardt Jr. as a caution flag flew for Kurt Busch again and the No.17 Ford was called the leader.

When a debris caution came out on lap 142, some of the field pitted and appeared ready to gamble that they could reach the checkered flag without stopping. But most of the leaders stayed out on the track waiting until they reached at least lap 150 before making their last stop.

Kenseth remained the leader with Stewart and Kasey Kahne just behind. Jeff Gordon was 12th and Earnhardt was 13th.

Kenseth got a good restart and quickly gained a one-second advantage over Stewart. Johnson passed Kahne for third and Edwards made his way into the top- five with 50 laps to go.

Edwards continued his climb as he edged past Kahne, Johnson and Stewart into second place behind the No.17 Ford. Then J.J.Yeley slammed the wall on lap 159 to bring out caution No.9 - tying the all-time record. The flag also meant that everyone would pit for the final time under caution throwing out any "fuel mileage" runs.

Off pit road first on lap 161 was Clint Bowyer (two tires) followed by Elliott Sadler (two tires) Kenseth (four new tires) and Jeff Green (two tires).

Kenseth took just two laps to return to the lead, but Bowyer didn't give up and he stayed at the top of the track with his foot planted to the floor. He re-took the lead down the backstretch. Kenseth was a determined driver today and he turned underneath him on lap 168 securing the lead.

Because it took Kenseth more than five laps to finally dispose of Bowyer, the rest of the field closed in on the two leaders. In particular was Stewart, Kahne and Jeff Gordon.

Kenseth's lead was 0.642 seconds over Bowyer and more than three seconds over Stewart with 25 laps remaining. His lead ballooned to over a second as the field crossed the 180-lap mark.

Gordon bullied his way past Stewart for third. The No.24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet was fastest on lap 182, fastest on lap 183 and again on lap 184.

But did he have enough time to catch both Bowyer and Kenseth?

Gordon reached Bowyer's back bumper on lap 187 and passed him easily. He was cutting into Kenseth's lead, but not by enough. Without a caution flag or a mistake by Kenseth, it was unlikely that he could make up the huge gap.

No caution flags flew and Kenseth made no errors over the final laps taking the checkered flag without a challenge.

"I wish we had a few more laps, I was catching Matt," said Gordon. "I would have liked to show him and everybody else that I know how to pass him clean. Congratulations to Matt he drove a great race."

Stewart, Kahne and Mark Martin completed the top-five.

Jimmie Johnson finished 13th and saw his lead over Kenseth drop to just 58 points (3,365 - 3,307).

The next race in the series is set for Saturday night, August 26th at the Bristol Motor Speedway.
