Bryan McCabe Re-Signs With Maple Leafs Toronto, ON -- (Sports Network) - The Toronto Maple Leafs Thursday re-signed defenseman Bryan McCabe to a five-year contract. The Toronto Sun reports the deal is worth about $28.75 million for McCabe, who would have become an unrestricted free agent July 1. The 31-year-old McCabe ranked third among NHL defensemen in points (68), behind only Nicklas Lidstrom (80) and Sergei Zubov (71), as well as third in goals (19), behind Mathieu Schneider (21) and Dion Phaneuf (20) last season. Also third highest in the league, McCabe recorded 45 points on the power play behind Tomas Kaberle (51) and Lidstrom (50). Those power play points are the 12th highest in the league, and McCabe notched the most average ice time per game with 28:17. "Bryan is one of the premier defensemen in the game, and as a key member of our team keeping him in Toronto was one of our top priorities this off- season," vice-president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs John Ferguson said. "Bryan is among the most skilled players at his position in the NHL. He also brings us valuable leadership both on and off the ice. We're pleased that he'll continue to be a cornerstone for our team in the future." McCabe this season set career highs in points, goals, assists, power play points, power play goals (13), power play assists (32), average ice time, game-winning goals (6) and shots (207). McCabe has recorded 95 goals and 243 assists with 1,378 penalty minutes in 781 career NHL games with the New York Islanders, Vancouver, Chicago and Toronto. He has 10 goals and 16 assists with 70 penalty minutes in 51 career playoff games. The St. Catharines native was originally drafted by the Islanders with their second choice, 40th overall, in the 1993 Entry Draft. "I'm very pleased to be continuing my career with the Leafs, and to be a member of one of hockey's most storied franchises. This team has the opportunity to win, and Toronto's terrific fans make it a great place to play," McCabe said.
