Shaq Dominates As Heat Finish Off Bulls In Game 6

POSTED: 12:26 am EDT May 5, 2006

(Sports Network) - Shaquille O'Neal scored 30 points and pulled down 20 rebounds, as the Miami Heat advanced to the second round of the playoffs by dominating the Chicago Bulls, 113-96, in Game 6 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series.

Dwyane Wade overcame a bruised left hip suffered on Tuesday, as he contributed 23 points and six assists before fouling out. The Heat won the final two contests of the best-of-seven series, and they closed out the Bulls at the United Center with solid inside play. Udonis Haslem added 17 points and 14 rebounds, while James Posey tallied 18 points and seven boards. Miami outrebounded the Bulls, 51-34.

O'Neal went 13-of-24 from the field and forced the Bulls into several defensive mismatches.

"If they let him play, he'll put a lot of numbers like that up there every night," Miami's Antoine Walker said of O'Neal. "You see what we can do when he's not in foul trouble. We haven't been able to play our game and it's upsetting when our best player wasn't out there. Tonight, he made some really good offensive moves."

The second-seeded Heat will face No. 3 seed New Jersey in the conference semifinals. The Nets finished off the Indiana Pacers in Game 6 of that first- round series on Thursday, 96-90, at Conseco Fieldhouse.

Kirk Hinrich had 23 points, Ben Gordon posted 21 and Andres Nocioni scored 20 for the Bulls.

"Shaq played great. He got the ball where he wanted," Bulls head coach Scott Skiles said. "He made some very clever passes in the first half and opened us up. We had great difficulty closing out to them."

The Bulls had the game tied just once, in the opening two minutes, but cut a hefty double-digit deficit to 97-88 following a three-point play by Gordon with 4:58 left. However, Haslem scrapped for a loose ball in the lane, hit a layup and the subsequent free throw 29 seconds after Gordon's points.

That started nine straight points by Miami, with O'Neal's alley-oop jam finishing the spurt to extend the Heat to a 106-88 cushion with 3:09 remaining.

"Anytime guys left him, we got him some lobs," Wade said. "He did an unbelievable job."

Miami never trailed and immediately established control with nine straight points for an 11-2 lead. Three-pointers by Wade and Walker capped the spurt.

Gary Payton ended an 8-0 run later in the period with another three to move the Heat to a 15-point advantage before the Bulls got within 29-19 after 12 minutes. The first quarter would be a sign of the outcome, as the Heat went 11-of-19 from the field, compared to 6-of-21 for the Bulls.

The Heat led by no less than seven in the second quarter, and O'Neal had 14 points and 11 boards at the half, as his team led 55-41 at intermission.

Two free throws by Hinrich had the Bulls within 45-38, but Walker and Posey hit three-pointers to highlight the next 10 straight points by the Heat.

Chicago cut its deficit to nine just once in the third, but were behind 84-69 going into the fourth.
