Eagles Soar Over BYU In Season Debut

POSTED: 8:07 pm EDT September 3, 2005

Quinton Porter threw for 232 yards and two touchdowns as 22nd-ranked Boston College got off to an impressive start to its 2005 season with a 20-3 victory over Brigham Young at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

Chris Miller caught both of Porter's touchdown throws while Will Blackmon had eight receptions for 100 yards for the Eagles (1-0) in their first game as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

John Beck racked up 330 yards on 41-of-60 passing, but the Cougars (0-1) were held to just eight rushing yards in Bronco Mendenhall's head coaching debut.

Porter, who finished 27-of-35 through the air in his first game action since 2003, was sharp on the Eagles' second drive of the afternoon and put Boston College up 7-0 with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Miller in the closing seconds of the first quarter.

After BYU held the ball for 12 plays and over 5 1/2 minutes before punting it away, Porter engineered a 10-play, 80-yard march and completed 6-of-7 passes for 61 yards on the series. The fifth-year senior hit Blackmon down the far sideline for a 25-yard gain to the Cougar 15-yard line, then found a wide open Miller in the end zone three plays later on a 3rd-and-9 with 29 seconds left in the opening period.

Porter started 10 games and threw for 1,764 yards in 2003 but was redshirted last season after being beaten out by Paul Peterson.

BYU couldn't manage any points in the first half despite amassing 205 yards of offense before the break.

The Cougars had one drive end in BC territory when Beck was stopped on a 4th- and-1 keeper at the Eagles 31-yard line. Late in the half, BYU moved into scoring range before coming away empty.

A 25-yard pass from Beck to Zac Collie got the Cougars to the BC 36, and Beck later fired an eight-yard strike to Daniel Coats on third down to put the ball inside the 20-yard line. However, two holding penalties helped stall the drive and forced a field-goal attempt by Jared McLaughlin.

McLaughlin's 48-yard attempt was blocked by Brian Toal and the Eagles took over at their own 44 with 22 seconds left in the half. Porter then connected with Jason Lilly on a 35-yard pass on the next play to set up Ryan Ohliger's 39-yard field goal which gave Boston College a 10-0 lead at intermission.

The Cougars would close within seven points when McLaughlin drilled a 35-yard field goal less than five minutes into the third quarter. A blocked punt by Bryan Kehl on the Eagles' opening possession of the half led to the score.

However, BYU was forced to punt on its next series and Porter orchestrated another long touchdown drive to increase BC's advantage to 17-3.

A 25-yard pass to Blackmon got the Eagles into Cougars' territory and Porter scrambled for eight yards and a first down to move the ball inside the 30-yard line. Blackmon then hauled in a 14-yard reception and Boston College powered the ball near the goal line before Porter capped the 12-play, 80-yard possession with a four-yard TD toss to Miller on the first play of the fourth quarter.

Ohliger capped the scoring with a 26-yard field goal with 4:25 to play.
