NFL Preseason Preview - N.Y. Jets (2-0) At N.Y. Giants (1-1)

By Tony Moss, NFL Editor -- New York bragging rights will be at stake at the Meadowlands on Friday night, when the Giants meet the Jets in the annual preseason battle between the two residents of Giants Stadium. The Jets enter the game in a more positive place than their co-occupant, having started the preseason 2-0 on the heels of last year's playoff appearance. Herman Edwards' club was a 28-21 winner over the Vikings last week. The Giants, who are seeking to rebound from last year's 6-10 campaign, saw the joy of their 27-21 win over Carolina Panthers last Saturday tempered by some bad news about their quarterback. Second-year pro Eli Manning went down with a sprained throwing elbow following a hit from defensive end Julius Peppers, and will miss at least this week's contest. Former Redskin Tim Hasselbeck, who was signed as backup by Tom Coughlin's club in the offseason, will get the start on Friday night. The Jets had concerns about their own quarterback situation entering the preseason, but a strong performance from Chad Pennington last Friday have may begun to alleviate those doubts. Pennington, who had offseason rotator cuff surgery and missed the team's first preseason game, completed 9-of-10 passes for 86 yards and a touchdown in the victory. The highlight of the evening was a 20-yard TD connection from Pennington to wideout Laveranues Coles, who has been impressive (7 receptions, 76 yards, 1 TD) after returning to the Jets following two seasons with the Redskins. Running back Curtis Martin, who carried the ball four times in each of New York's first two preseason contests, could see more extensive work in the Jets' third August tune-up. Defensively, cornerback and recent free agent acquisition Ty Law is expected to see his first action in a Jets uniform on Friday. Law, who missed the second half of last season with a broken foot, could play two or more series versus the Giants. Safety Rashad Washington (concussion), running back Cedric Houston (sprained shoulder) and fullback Jerald Sowell (ribs) will not play on Friday. With Manning out, the Giants fans in attendance will get a long look at Hasselbeck, who started five games with Washington during the 2003 campaign. Hasselbeck has thrown for 183 yards with two touchdowns and an interception during the preseason to date. The fourth-year pro tossed a six-yard scoring strike to Tim Carter in the fourth quarter of the Carolina win. Hasselbeck will be followed in the lineup by Jesse Palmer, who started three games as a Giant in 2003 but has thrown just three passes in the preseason to date. Running back Tiki Barber, who has only four carries in the 2005 preseason, should play most or all of the first half against the Jets. Cornerback Will Peterson (sprained knee) will join Manning on the list of Giants not in uniform on Friday. Second-year pro Curtis Deloatch will start in his place. Defensive end Michael Strahan, who missed most of 2004 with a torn chest muscle, is questionable for Friday's game due to sore rib cartilage. The Jets lead the all-time preseason series with the Giants, 19-16-1, including a 17-10 win in 2004. The Giants hold a 6-4 edge in the regular season series, with a 31-28 overtime victory in 2003 ranking as the most recent matchup.
