High 5: Westford's Jess Deveny

Grey Ghost Hoop Star Eclipses 2,000-Point Plateau

Westford Academy basketball star Jessalyn DevenyThe High 5 Athlete for Friday, Feb. 16, is Westford Academy basketball standout Jessalyn Deveny (pictured, right). SportsCenter 5's Mike Lynch knows how tough it is for a high school player to amass 1,000 points in a career. Well, this Ghosts' senior star just eclisped the 2,000-point plateua -- becoming only the 16th female in Bay State hoops history to do so. And she did it in typically sterling fashion -- entering a game against Weston needing 33 points to eclipe the plateau, and easily getting it by the opening minutes of the second half. She scored the historic bucket on a driving baseline layup that featured all of her skills. Deveny is an unstoppable force on the court, a strong forward who can easily dominate inside, who also has the ability to hit the outside jumper. Westford's Jess Deveny lines up a jumper. "If Jess stopped playing basketball tomorrow, she'd still be a success," Westford coach Al Duffett said. "She's a phenomenal student, and kids love her." Deveny is an Honor Roll student who will take her considerable student-athlete skills to Boston College this fall.
