Yankees Move Closer To Rematch With Boston

POSTED: 12:01 am EDT October 9, 2004

The defending American League champion New York Yankees need just one more win to move into the ALCS against the Boston Red Sox.

Kevin Brown threw six innings of one-run ball and Derek Jeter drove in three runs to lead New York to an 8-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins Friday in Game 3 of their American League Division Series at the Metrodome.

After losing Game 1, New York has won two straight and can move on to the ALCS with a win Saturday in Game 4 of the best-of-five series. Struggling righthander Javier Vazquez will start for the Yankees against Johan Santana, who won the series opener with seven shutout innings.

The Yankees beat Boston in last year's ALCS on a home run by Aaron Boone in the bottom of the 11th inning in Game 7. Earlier Friday, the Red Sox completed a sweep of their best-of-five series against Anaheim on a homer by David Ortiz in the bottom of the 10th inning.

Brown (1-0) allowed eight hits and struck out one without walking a batter. The righthander, making his first postseason start since 1998, worked his way out of trouble in the second and fourth innings.

Bernie Williams hit a two-run homer and Hideki Matsui added a solo shot for the Yankees.

Jacque Jones homered for the Twins.

The Yankees erased a one-run deficit with five straight singles in the bottom of the second inning. Twins starter Carlos Silva retired the first two hitters in the frame, but Jorge Posada and John Olerud singled to get things started. Miguel Cairo, Kenny Lofton and Jeter followed with consecutive RBI singles to give New York a 3-1 lead.

New York added to its lead with four runs in the visitors' sixth to take control of the game. Matsui singled leading off and Williams homered to give the Yankees a 5-1 lead. Posada followed with a single to end Silva's outing. Twins reliever J.C. Romero walked Olerud, but retired the next two hitters before Jeter greeted new pitcher Jesse Crain with a two-run single to give New York a 7-1 cushion.

A strange play in the seventh helped New York increase its lead to 8-1. Matsui hit a long fly ball to center with one out in the inning, but Minnesota's Torii Hunter leaped and grabbed the ball at the wall. However, his glove hand hit the top of the wall and the ball bounced out and into the seats for a home run. Matsui thought he was out and stopped running between second and third. He started back toward the Yankees' dugout, but Williams got his attention from the on deck circle and the Japanese slugger finished rounding the bases.

Minnesota loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth, as reliever Felix Heredia hit the first two batters and Tanyon Sturtze served up a single to Cristian Guzman. After Michael Cuddyer drove in a run, Mariano Rivera came in to pitch for New York.

Pinch-hitter Jose Offerman grounded out to bring in a run and Shannon Stewart hit a sacrifice fly to cut the Yankees lead to 8-4. Rivera, however, retired Jones on a grounder to third to end the ballgame.

Jones' homer with one out in the bottom of the first inning got the Twins out to a quick 1-0 lead.

The Twins had runners at first and third and one out in the second, but Brown struck out Cuddyer and retired Henry Blanco on a liner to third to get out of the inning.

In the fourth, Minnesota had two runners on but Brown got Cuddyer to ground out to end the frame.

Hunter doubled leading off the home sixth, but was thrown out trying for third on the play. With two outs, Corey Koskie singled, but Williams made a strong throw and Koskie was thrown out trying for a double.

Silva (0-1) took the loss in his first postseason appearance. The righthander was charged with six runs on 10 hits in five innings.
