American League Game Summary - Boston At Anaheim

POSTED: 2:05 am EDT June 3, 2004

Vladimir Guerrero belted a pair of home runs and set an Angels record with nine runs batted in, leading Anaheim to a 10-7 victory over the Boston Red Sox at Angel Stadium.

David Eckstein was somewhat overshadowed by Guerrero's performance despite a 5-for-5 night that extended his hitting streak to 17 games. Eckstein also drove in a run and scored four times for the Angels, who swept the two-game set and won for the third time in their last four games.

Guerrero finished 4-for-4 and was a triple shy of the cycle. He now has 14 home runs this season, leads the American League with 49 RBI and is third in batting at .357.

"I've never seen a night like I saw tonight with Vlady Guerrero," said Angels manager Mike Scioscia. "Every time he was up there, he was on every pitch."

Manny Ramirez hit his 15th homer for the Red Sox, while David Ortiz, Pokey Reese and Kevin Youkilis each drove in two runs.

Boston has lost three in a row and suffered this setback with ace Pedro Martinez on the hill. The righthander did not take the loss, but was roughed up for seven runs on 11 hits in five-plus innings.

The Angels trailed 7-5 heading to the home sixth, but Guerrero rectified that with his second homer of the game.

Eckstein led off the inning with a base hit and Chone Figgins drew a walk, ending Martinez's night. Guerrero then greeted Mike Timlin (3-2) with a line drive homer over the left-center field wall to make it 8-7.

Guerrero had driven in all of Anaheim's runs through six innings.

The Angels added to their lead with two more in the seventh. Bengie Molina led off with a single and raced home from first on a double to the right-center field gap by Eckstein. After Figgins singled, Guerrero welcomed Keith Foulke with another base hit to score Eckstein for a 10-7 advantage.

"They've got some good pitchers over there. It was nothing that Vlady didn't go up there and earn," Scioscia added.

Ramon Ortiz (2-4) earned the win in relief with 2 2/3 hitless innings. Scot Shields worked two scoreless frames and Francisco Rodriguez pitched the ninth to notch his second save.

Jarrod Washburn started for Anaheim, but left after surrendering seven runs on nine hits in just 3 1/3 innings.

Guerrero got his big night started early, blasting a two-run homer in the first inning. Eckstein led off with a single and Guerrero drilled a Martinez offering into the left field seats to make it 2-0.

"I made a mistake. He took me deep. So I have to tip my hat and just let it go," Martinez said.

Ramirez answered with a leadoff homer in the second and the Red Sox tied it in the third when Mark Bellhorn doubled, took third on a base hit by Youkilis and scored on a sacrifice fly by David Ortiz.

The Angels went back in front in the bottom of the third. Eckstein and Figgins started the inning with singles and both scored on Guerrero's double down the left field line.

The Red Sox responded with five in the fourth, as Reese singled in two runs and Youkilis doubled home two before scoring on a double by David Ortiz to make it 7-4.

Washburn exited after walking Ramirez intentionally and Ramon Ortiz got Kevin Millar to hit into an inning-ending double play.

The Angels got one back in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Guerrero.

"Vlady is always the player you dream of," Martinez said. "I tried to walk him. I saw some pitches that I threw -- six or seven inches off the plate -- and he still made contact and just made the whole at-bat difficult."

Game Notes:

The previous Angels record for RBI in a game was eight, set by Lee Thomas and Leon Wagner in 1961 and matched by Don Baylor in 1979 and again by Adam Kennedy in 2000...Martinez notched his 2,500th career strikeout with a 15- pitch at-bat against Casey Kotchman. Martinez finished with four strikeouts and tied Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson for 25th on the all-time list with 2,502 Ks...Guerrero has 20 career multi-homer games...Ramirez has seven homers in his last 14 games.
