2 Derby Horses Injured, 1 Pulled From Race
Kafwain Won't Race, Empire Maker Looks Iffy
LOUISVILLE -- Two big-name horses preparing for the Kentucky Derby -- including the favorite -- are suffering from injuries, and one has been pulled from the race.
Kafwain was injured either during a workout or just after the workout Tuesday morning.
Trainer Bob Baffert pulled Kafwain from the Derby a short time after the injury appeared.
Baffert said the animal suffered soft-tissue damage to one of its legs.
"Once you have something going on like that, you can't take a chance," Baffert said.
Also, Empire Maker suffered a bruised heel on its right-front foot.
According to Louisville television station WLKY, Empire Maker's trainer, Bobby Frankel, will attempt to nurse the animal back to health before Saturday.
The injury occurred during the Wood Memorial Stakes last weekend, WLKY reported.
Additional information about the injuries is not available.
