GAME NOTES: The Western Michigan Broncos will try to continue their dominance over the Buffalo Bulls when the two teams collide this Saturday in a Mid- American Conference battle a Waldo Stadium. This will be the fifth meeting in the all-time series, with WMU winning all four of the previous matchups, including a 34-28 decision last year.

The Bulls head into this matchup riding a two-game winning streak. The most recent victory was a thrilling, 21-17 decision over Akron, giving the team's its first league win on the year.

As for the Broncos, they are coming off a 34-23 setback to Central Michigan. It was the second loss in the last three games for WMU, which is now just 2-2 in MAC action. Western Michigan has won two of its three home matchups this year, and since the start of the 2006 campaign the Broncos are 14-5 at Waldo Stadium.

The Bulls come into this matchup averaging an impressive 392.3 total ypg, but that has led to just 22.0 ppg. The ground game is churning out a healthy 140.3 rushing ypg, but the real success of this unit has been the passing attack. Zach Maynard, who has completed 63.0 percent of his throws, comes into this weekend with 1,671 yards and 13 touchdowns. Naaman Roosevelt has been the main target for Maynard throughout the season and is currently pacing the team with 52 receptions, 705 yards and six touchdowns. It was the tandem of Maynard and Roosevelt that helped Buffalo grab a four-point win over Akron this past Saturday. Maynard threw for 205 yards and two scores in the victory, while Roosevelt was on the receiving end of both touchdowns and finished the game with 12 receptions and 100 yards. The success of the passing attack overshadowed the poor performance by the ground game, which rumbled for just 107 yards on a mere 2.9 yards per attempt.

Defensively the Bulls have endured some struggles this season, especially against the run, as opponents are gashing Buffalo for 149.1 ypg and out of the 18 touchdowns allowed by this unit, 12 have come via the run. Overall this defense is surrendering just 331.0 total ypg, and that has led to 24.0 ppg. Seven games into the season and the Bulls have been unable to force many big plays and come into this matchup with only nine takeaways and nine sacks. In the win over Akron on Saturday, the Bulls held the Zips to just 17 points, but still had trouble stopping the run, as Akron rumbled for 134 yards and two scores against the Bulls. The defense did force three turnovers in the win and also held Akron to just 5-of-14 on third down attempts.

Throughout the season the Broncos have relied heavily on their passing attack to get the job done offensively, averaging 279.3 ypg through the air. Out of the 22 touchdowns scored by this unit, 14 have come via the pass. Overall Western Michigan is averaging a healthy 391.9 total ypg, and that has led to an equally strong 26.0 ppg. Tim Hiller, who has completed 62.5 percent of his throws on the year, has been one of the top quarterbacks in the conference and currently has 1,904 passing yards and 13 touchdowns against seven interceptions. Even though the passing attack has been the main focus for WMU, the ground game has still done an admirable job, thanks in large part to Brandon West, who is pacing the team with 630 yards and five touchdowns on 5.3 yards per attempt. In the team's recent loss to Central Michigan, it was once again the passing game that did most of the damage for WMU. Hiller threw the football 66 times in the loss and finished the game with 410 yards and two touchdowns. However, the signal caller was intercepted once and sacked three times.

Defensively the Broncos appear to have too many holes to put forth a consistent effort on a weekly basis, as the team is currently surrendering 26.9 ppg behind 403.7 total ypg. Western Michigan has allowed 13 touchdowns through the air on the season, but the main problem for this defense has been its inability to stop the run, as opponents are churning out 182.9 ypg on 4.7 yards per attempt. Western Michigan's struggles against the run continued in the team's recent loss to Central Michigan, as the Broncos were gashed for 188 yards and two scores on 5.9 yards per attempt. Western Michigan did force one turnover in the setback, but did not record a sack and allowed the Chippewas to convert on all five of their red zone chances. Overall the defense for Western Michigan was pounded for 426 total yards and that led to 34 points.

The Broncos have been far too inconsistent this season and it shows in the team's lackluster 3-4 record. However, Western Michigan should be able to score enough points, thanks to its passing attack, to slip past Buffalo this weekend.
