GAME NOTES: The Memphis Tigers wrap up their schedule at home against the struggling Tulane Green Wave in a Conference USA tilt at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. It's been an abysmal season for the Green Wave, who enter this final game trying to snap a seven-game skid and go out on a high note. However, Tulane is winless in five road games this season. The Green Wave got embarrassed at Tulsa last weekend, 56-7, and they've dropped each of their past five games by double digits. As for the Tigers, they are coming off a tough 28-21 loss to UCF. They had won two straight to pull to within striking distance of first place in the C-USA East Division, but they've now fallen two games back of East Carolina. Tigers head coach Tommy West said this week that he was really disappointed in the errors that cost his team the game, especially this late in the season. But now Memphis must regroup and take aim at a fifth straight victory over Tulane in the head-to-head series. Memphis has a 15-11-1 all-time record against the Green Wave. The Green Wave lost star running back Andre Anderson (123.4 rushing ypg) to a dislocated shoulder in late-October. Since then, the team has not been able to get anything going on offense. Tulsa was moving the ball and scoring at will last week, which in turn forced Tulane into catch-up mode fairly early. Quarterback Kevin Moore finished with just 144 passing yards on 15-of-30 passing. Without Anderson, points have come at a premium for the offense. Tulane enters this tilt with the nation's 112th-ranked scoring offense (17.64 ppg). Moore is only averaging 185.5 ypg through the air, and he has thrown more interceptions (11) than touchdowns (eight). A season-ending injury to wideout Jeremy Williams (five TDs, 87.4 receiving ypg) in early-October took away the only real threat in the passing game. Aside from senior safety David Skehan, nobody on the Tulane defense had anything to write home about following last week's blowout loss. Skehan came away with two interceptions and a career-high 11 tackles against Tulsa, but his efforts went for naught, as the Green Wave were constantly gashed by the run. Tulsa running back Tarrion Adams set a school-record with 323 rushing yards, as the Golden Hurricane went on to pile up a eye-popping 489 yards on the ground. The 55 points were the most Tulane has given up since a 55-7 loss to Louisville in 2004. Tulsa never punted in the game. The Green Wave now rank second-to-last in the conference in run defense, and they are yielding 33.55 ppg, which ranks 103rd in the nation. A major reason for that has been the inability of the front-seven to make any plays in the backfield, as Tulane currently ranks dead last in the nation in tackles for a loss. Coach West said at his weekly press conference that he thinks running back Curtis Steele (hamstring) will be 100 percent this week. According to West, Steele was battling an illness last week, as he labored his way to 38 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. On the season, he is averaging 94.5 rushing yards per game. Quarterback Arkelon Hall returned to the lineup for the first time since breaking his thumb October 18th against East Carolina, though he was not himself. Hall completed just 15-of-35 passes for 183 yards. Coach West attributed his quarterback's performance to a combination of rust, and a stout defensive effort by UCF. In either case, Hall will have to play better against a Tulane defense that leads the league in pass defense. Given the success Tulsa had running the football against the Green Wave, Steele should expect a heavy workload, if his body is up to the task. Credit the Memphis defense for a solid effort against UCF, which included 11 tackles for loss in the game. One of the Knights touchdowns came by way of a first-quarter fumble recovery, as the Memphis D held them to a mere 194 yards of total offense. However, the Tigers left a few takeaways on the field -- literally. UCF put the ball on the ground a total of five times in the game, yet Memphis recovered only one of those fumbles. Jeremy Longstreet and Alton Starr were very active, as each recorded nine tackles, including two for loss. Greg Jackson registered 2.5 sacks. For much of the season, the team's strength on defense has been its ability to defend the pass. Currently, the Tigers rank third in the conference in allowing just 197.36 ypg through the air. Still, they have just five interceptions on the season, and nobody has more than one. Starr leads the team with 79 tackles on the season, while Longstreet is next in line with 69 Two years ago, UTEP had its bowl hopes spoiled in the season finale against a one-win Memphis team. This year, with the Tigers in position for a possible bowl invite, it's a good bet coach West will have his players ready for battle.
