The Boston police Internal Affairs Division and Suffolk County District Attorney's office are investigating the death of a 22-year-old who collapsed during the celebration of the Boston Celtics NBA Championship victory.

David J. Woodman, 22, of Southwick, Mass., struggled with police after they saw him drinking from an open container of what officers believed was alcohol shortly after the Celtics victory on June 17, police said.

Officers said they approached Woodman near the Fenway area and he attempted to flee. He was caught and being handcuffed, when police said they noticed he was in “medical distress.”

Police began CPR and called an ambulance to take him to Beth Israel Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition for 10 days. He was pronounced dead Sunday morning.

Investigators, including the Homicide Unit, are waiting for Woodman’s autopsy results to determine the cause of his death.
