Major League Baseball has suspended Coco Crisp for seven games, Jon Lester for five games and Sean Casey for three games for their actions in Thursday night’s bench-clearing brawl with Tampa Bay.

The Red Sox were described as being "incredulous" over the length of the suspensions. The players have the right to appeal.

The fight on the field started after Crisp was hit on the right hip by a second-inning pitch from James Shields. Crisp dropped his bat, charged the mound and ducked a wild right by Shields before throwing a few punches himself.

Crisp was tackled to the ground by Tampa Bay catcher Dioner Navarro. Rays designated hitter Jonny Gomes charged the mound from the dugout, jumped on Navarro and Crisp, and threw several punches that hit Crisp while he was on the ground.

After the fight, Lester hit the Rays' Carl Crawford and later threw behind the legs of Willy Aybar.

Lester told the Providence Journal he would not appeal, which means he will miss one start.

"There’s nothing I can really do about it," he said.

Casey told the paper he did not expect the suspension and planned to appeal.

"I’m going to find out why and then I’ll know what they saw. I was pretty surprised," he said.

Five Tampa Bay players were suspended by Major League Baseball. Shields was suspended for six games, Gomes and Edwin Jackson for five, Carl Crawford for 4 games and Akinori Iwamura for three.
