2008 NCAA TOURNAMENT

Who's Dancing? NCAA Selects Brackets

UNC Named Overall No. 1 Seed

UPDATED: 11:49 pm EDT March 16, 2008

The most pressing question surrounding college basketball was answered Sunday: Who's in, and who's out?

The selection committee unveiled the 65-team field for the NCAA tournament Sunday, awarding the tournament's overall top seed to North Carolina. The Tar Heels are the top seed in the East, while Memphis will top the South, UCLA is No. 1 in the West and Kansas will highlight the Midwest.

North Carolina, the top-ranked team in The Associated Press poll, claimed the ACC tournament Sunday, as Kansas won its third straight Big 12 title with a win over Texas. UCLA is coming off of a victory over Stanford in the Pac-10 championship, and Memphis rolled to a Conference USA tournament title.

The No. 2 seeds went to Tennessee (East), Georgetown (Midwest), Texas (South) and Duke (West).

Tennessee, which was ranked No. 1 just a few weeks ago, suffered an upset in the SEC tournament when it fell to Arkansas in the semifinals. Duke and Georgetown also lost in their conference tournaments, with the Blue Devils falling to Clemson in the ACC semifinals and the Hoyas falling to Pittsburgh in the Big East championship.

While the big names grabbed the top seeds, some other teams enter the tournament as Cinderella hopefuls. Butler, who has pulled an upset in the NCAA tournament before, is back in the field, as is Boise State, which defeated New Mexico to book its first trip to the NCAA tournament in 14 years. Also included in this year's field are newcomers American and Maryland-Baltimore County.

Two-time defending champion Florida was not included in this year's tournament field. The Gators, 21-11, lost to Alabama in the first round of the SEC tournament to extend its losing streak to four games. Also absent from the field is last year's runner-up, Ohio State.

The NCAA tournament begins Tuesday with the play-in game between Coppin State and Mount St. Mary's in Dayton, Ohio. First-round action tips off Thursday.
