Clemens Investigation Extends To Houston

IRS Agents Look Into Link Between Pitcher, Clinic

The Internal Revenue Service has contacted a Houston-area clinic to determine if Roger Clemens obtained performance-enhancing drugs there, the New York Times reported Friday.

A former employee of the clinic told the New York Times that federal agents asked about the operation of Shaun Kelley Weight Control, and if Clemens knew the center’s owner, Shaun K. Kelley. The employee, who spoke to the Times under the condition of anonymity, said that Clemens visited the center, spent about 20 minutes in Kelley's office, and then left. Kelley claimed that Clemens had never been in his store.

According to the Times, IRS agents have not yet spoken to Kelley, the brother-in-law of former Olympic champion Mary Lou Retton. The newspaper also reported that Special Agent Jeff Novitzky, who is heading up the Clemens' perjury investigation, is interested in speaking to several people in the Houston area.

Kelley, 46, has denied that he was ever involved with performance-enhancing drugs. However, he has advertised human growth hormone on his Web site, and his e-mail address appeared in an online inquiry about purchasing HGH from a Chinese company in 2005, the Times reported.

Clemens, a seven-time Cy Young Award winner, is being investigated for perjury after he told Congress under oath that he never used steroids. His testimony differed from that of Brian McNamee, a former trainer of Clemens who claims he injected the pitcher with performance-enhancing drugs.
