Clemens' Lawyers Begin Own Steroids Probe

Seven-Time Cy Young Winner Named In Mitchell Report

The lead attorney for Roger Clemens has begun his own investigation into allegations that the seven-time Cy Young award winner used steroids and human growth hormone.

The New York Times reported that Rusty Hardin and his firm plan on refuting findings from the Mitchell Report. George Mitchell, the former Senate majority leader who was hired by Major League Baseball to investigate steroid use in the game, reported that Brian McNamee, a former strength coach with the Toronto Blue Jays and the New York Yankees, claimed he injected Clemens with steroids in 1998 while with the Blue Jays, and later while the pitcher was with the Yankees.

McNamee also claimed he injected Clemens with human growth hormone.

"We are convinced the conclusions in Mitchell's report are wrong and are investigating the findings ourselves," Hardin told the newspaper. "At this stage we have uncovered a lot of logical people who we thought Mitchell was going to talk to but never talked to him or his investigators. That's troubling."

Hardin also told the Times that Clemens plans to meet with the media on Jan. 6, the same day the star pitcher is scheduled for an interview with Mike Wallace on CBS's "60 Minutes."

"After '60 Minutes' airs (Clemens) will be sitting down to answer questions directly to members of the media," Hardin said. "We haven't figured out where it will happen but he will answer questions that night."
