Line Of Scrimmage: Week 15 - Petrino Out...Who's Next?

POSTED: 5:27 pm EST December 12, 2007

(Sports Network) - Bobby Petrino and the Atlanta Falcons were a bad match from the very beginning.

Forget the Michael Vick situation for a second, and consider the former Louisville head man's coaching style.

Word from Flowery Branch, GA, where the Falcons train, was that Petrino was riding his players, college freshmen-style, during the team's first mini-camp. Yes, mini-camp.

Unless you're Bill Parcells and have a couple of sparkling Super Bowl rings adorning your iron fists, that approach is never going to work on professional adults. The Falcons, especially the team's veterans, took to Petrino like fans at a Soulja Boy concert would to Andy Williams.

What a surprise that Petrino's previous experience as a pro coach had come learning at the feet of the one and only Tom Coughlin in Jacksonville, aka the man who wrote the multi-volume textbook on how not to treat NFL players.

And so it was that Petrino bolted town in the dead of night, like he was driving the Colts' Mayflower van to Indianapolis. Believe me, the Arkansas media guide will be playing up the 41-9 college record, and relegating the 3-10 pro mark to agate type.

He's the first NFL head coach to leave us in 2007, and he won't be the last.

Many around the nation are currently pondering the fate of the Dolphins' Cam Cameron, who could be about to preside over the first 0-16 season in NFL history. Somebody's going to cough up a pound of flesh if that happens, but I'm not convinced it should be Cameron.

This organization was clearly thinking about next year by mid-October, which is why you saw John Beck on the field before he was ready and why Chris Chambers was traded. If somebody had told Cameron that he needed to go 2-14 to keep his job, he probably could have found a way to string together a couple of wins, rather than playing for the future.

Cameron's offense worked pretty well before Ronnie Brown got hurt, and the defense is being presided over by one of the league's most respected coordinators in Dom Capers. 0-16 or not, this staff deserves another year to prove itself.

The coaching regime that could be in its final days, and deservedly so, is Mike Nolan's in San Francisco. The 49ers were picked by many to win the NFC West in 2007 (this writer's hand is raised), but are no better than the second-worst team in football right now. Nolan has become embroiled in a petty feud with franchise quarterback Alex Smith over the severity of his shoulder injury, a situation that has clearly divided the locker room. It is difficult to see Nolan and Smith co-existing into 2008, and it would be much easier for the Niners to get rid of the coach than the quarterback.

Carolina's John Fox, whose team has underachieved for two straight years and looks headed toward a 1-9 season-ending stretch, probably needs to go, too. Fox is the best coach in Panthers history and has won some playoff games, but the team has clearly passed its peak under his guidance. The buzz in Charlotte is that North Carolina resident Bill Cowher could be stalking the Carolina sideline next season.

Any other coaching changes will likely be dictated by something other than team performance. The Chiefs' Herm Edwards, Ravens' Brian Billick, and Lions' Rod Marinelli will all get at least another year despite their team's poor second halves. Rams management has already said Scott Linehan will be back, too.

But there have been strong hints that the Eagles' Andy Reid, Redskins' Joe Gibbs, and/or the Seahawks' Mike Holmgren are all in burnout mode and could call it a day when 2007 concludes. Reid and Holmgren are at the helm of aging teams that will probably get worse before they get better. Gibbs is 67 years old and doesn't look to be having much fun working for Daniel Snyder.

Whatever is about to transpire in any of the cities above, know that the carousel has only begun to spin, with Petrino mounting the lead horse.

Let's take a look at the week that will be in the National Football League:

WEEKLY SEED REPORT

NFL POWER POLL

The Sports Network's updated NFL Power Poll, which ranks all 32 league teams, can be found at:

http://www.sportsnetwork.com/default.asp?c=sportsnetwork&page=nfl/misc/nfl- poll.htm

FANTASY - FIVE TO START

Kyle Boller, QB, Baltimore (at Miami) - Yeah, its Kyle Boller, but the Dolphins' secondary is awful.

Darius Walker, RB, Houston (vs. Denver) - Rookie could have a breakout performance against Broncos' front seven.

Lee Evans, WR, Buffalo (at Cleveland) - Browns don't have a corner to cover the speedster Evans.

Vernon Davis, TE, San Francisco (vs. Cincinnati) - Starting QB Shaun Hill will look often to his fellow Terp.

San Diego Defense (vs. Detroit) - Jon Kitna will give the Chargers plenty of opportunities to add to their league-leading INT total.

FANTASY - FIVE TO BENCH

Ben Roethlisberger, QB, Pittsburgh (vs. Jacksonville) - Jaguars' defense generally gives the Steelers some problems.

Kolby Smith, RB, Kansas City (vs. Tennessee) - Chiefs line won't bounce back in a significant way against strong Tennessee front seven.

Steve Smith, WR, Carolina (vs. Seattle) - Hasn't had time to get downfield and do damage for most of the season.

Andre Johnson, WR, Houston (vs. Denver) - Champ Bailey should hold him somewhat in check.

Desmond Clark, TE, Chicago (at Minnesota) - Hard to know what kind of impact Kyle Orton will have on the Bears offense.

SUICIDE POOL PIX

1. New England (vs. N.Y. Jets) - If you haven't used the Patriots yet, you're looking very good to collect some holiday cash.

2. Tampa Bay (vs. Atlanta) - Even before the Petrino distraction, the Buccaneers were going to win this one big.

3. San Diego (vs. Detroit) - Lions are desperate for a win, but don't match up well with the Chargers.

THE GAMES

I was a solid 13-3 in my picks last week, and an atypically positive 11-5 against the spread. Baby Girl Moss, who is gearing up for her first Christmas, managed just an 8-8 mark against the spread but remains four games ahead of the best of TSN's group of 16 "Pigskin Prognosticators," namely company CEO Mickey Charles. Mickey is unlikely to show any mercy in trying to defeat Little Miss Moss, whether she's an infant or not. The little one is 109-89-10 against the spread, 19 games better than Daddy, who is 134-74 at picking winners.

Denver (6-7) at Houston (6-7), Thursday, 8:15 (Pick)

Prediction: Texans will be fired up, but are too injury-depleted and inexperienced to pull off a win of this magnitude. Broncos 23, Texans 20

---

Cincinnati (5-8) at San Francisco (3-10), Saturday, 8:15 (Cincinnati -8)

Storylines: Niners' Shaun Hill expected to make his first NFL start in place of injured quarterbacks Alex Smith (shoulder) and Trent Dilfer (concussion), and ex-Panthers starter Chris Weinke was signed on Wednesday to back him... Cincinnati trying to avoid its first losing season since 2002...Bengals wideout T.J. ---

Tennessee (7-6) at Kansas City (4-9), Sunday, 1:00 (Tennessee -4)

Storylines: Chiefs have lost six in a row since a 4-3 start, and are trying to avoid their first seven-game skid since dropping nine consecutive during the 1987 season...Titans, who are a game back of Cleveland in the AFC Wild Card race as Week 15 begins, blew a 17-3 fourth-quarter lead to lose to the Chargers, 23-17 in overtime, last Sunday...Chiefs quarterback Brodie Croyle still seeking his first win as an NFL starter...Tennessee has a league-low seven touchdown passes on the year...Chiefs are last in the NFL in rushing offense (80.2 yards per game)...Titans running back LenDale White is 133 yards shy of his first career 1,000-yard season...Kansas City tight end Tony Gonzalez is 46 yards shy of his third career 1,000-yard season...Chiefs running back Larry Johnson (foot) will miss his sixth consecutive game...
