'We're Movin' On,' Fined Pats Coach Says

Belichick 'Changing Procedures' For Sunday's Game

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick is moving on from the spying scandal that rocked the team and is focused on Sunday's game against the San Diego Chargers, he said Friday.

"It's over, and we are moving on. All of my energy and focus and attention is on the San Diego Chargers," Belichick said. "I tried to act in a timely way -- and right now, it's San Diego and that is what we are moving on to."

Belichick spoke little about the fine that was imposed by the NFL less than 24 hours before the news conference. It included a personal penalty of $500,000, the maximum allowed by the league's constitution, after the team was caught taping signals during the New York Jets game on Sunday.

When asked about what he will do differently in the upcoming game, Belichick said he would "change the procedure" and refused to elaborate on the controversy.

"We are getting ready for the Chargers, and there is plenty to get ready for. Everything else is in the past. We are done with it. The decision has been made, and we are moving on. We are focused on what is in front of us, and that is the Chargers."

Team owner Robert Kraft released a statement late Friday expressing his respect for Belichick.

"I believe that Coach Belichick always tries to do what is best for the team, and he is always accountable for his decisions. He has been a very important part of what our organization has accomplished over the last seven years. In this case, one of his decisions has resulted in a severe penalty for our franchise. He has paid a heavy price and so has our organization. He has apologized for his actions. I accept his apology and look forward to working with him as we move forward," Kraft said.

The punishment will also cost the Patriots at least one draft choice in next year's NFL draft. It will be a first-round choice if the Patriots make the playoffs; otherwise, second-and third-round choices, and the team must also pay a $250,000 fine. Belichick was not suspended, though Commissioner Roger Goodell said he considered it.

"This episode represents a calculated and deliberate attempt to avoid longstanding rules designed to encourage fair play and promote honest competition on the playing field," Goodell wrote in a letter to the Patriots.

The $500,000 fine has to be paid by Belichick himself and cannot be paid by the team's owner, Robert Kraft. In a statement Thursday night after the fine was imposed, Belichick apologized to Kraft and to the fans.

"Once again, I apologize to the Kraft family and every person directly or indirectly associated with the New England Patriots for the embarrassment, distraction and penalty my mistake caused. I also apologize to Patriots fans and would like to thank them for their support during the past few days and throughout my career," Belichick said.

Belichick said he had misinterpreted NFL rules, but accepted full responsibility. "Part of my job as head coach is to ensure that our football operations are conducted in compliance of the league rules," he said.

Goodell said he determined that the Patriots' use of the camera did not have any impact on the outcome of the game, which the Patriots won 38-14. The Patriots were accused of spying during Sunday's game by Jets coach Eric Mangini. Mangini was formerly Belichick's assistant on the Patriots.

NFL security officials confiscated a video camera from Patriots video assistant Matt Estrella on the sideline Sunday.

Some fans agreed that it was time to move on, while others said the controversy would have a lasting impact.

"I think it is over, and I think he did learn a lesson. Unfortunately, he had to take down the rest of the team in an embarrassing manner," one fan said.

"I don't think he needs to explain anymore. I think the penalty is too severe, and I think what they can do is use it for some motivation," another fan said.

"Just go prepare for the game and get ready for San Diego. That's his style," another fan said.

"People are pulling these kids of pranks all the time, and I think the commissioner was looking to make a point with Belichick," another fan said.
