BOSTON -- Independent candidates haven't fared well in Massachusetts politics. In the past century, not one has been elected governor of the state. But Christy Mihos wants to change that.NewsCenter 5's Pam Cross reported that Mihos, a former Republican, is trying to get attention in a race dominated by Republicans and Democrats.Mihos said with the Democrats for governor battling, it's hard to get noticed."It's all about the Democrats right now, really. It's a spirited primary. We're going to the final. I don't know which one of them is going to the final, I know I'm going to the final," Mihos said.A businessman with a string of convenience stores, Mihos has pledged his own money for the campaign. He called his Proposition 1 a plan to revitalize the state economy."(Proposition 1) puts a cap on property assessments for businesses and residents so your property can't be reassessed until you sell your property," said Mihos. "We want to increase local aid from 28 percent of state annual revenues to 40 percent, which would put well over $1 billion back in the coffers of the cities and towns that have had their local aid taken away from them by the Healey-Romney administration."Mihos was kicked off the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority board by a former governor and ignored by then-Turnpike Chairman Matt Amorello."We wanted to bring in an independent oversight group to take over this project. None of that which has happened lately would have happened if we had just stopped. This is wrong right now. This is worse than you could ever imagine. And as we go forward, someone will have to stand tall, stand up to these contractors and get your money back. This is a disgrace," he said.Mihos said blazing his own trail is something he is used to doing. Mihos said when the primary is over, his election marathon will begin.
