WASHINGTON -- The Pentagon has found more pay records for President George W. Bush during his time with the Alabama National Guard.
Like those released by the White House, the new records show no indication of guard service for Bush during three summer months in 1972.Bush was with the Alabama Guard unit so he could work on the Senate campaign of a Bush family friend. The Pentagon previously said the records for the period had been inadvertently destroyed. On Friday, an official said the inability to find the records earlier was an "inadvertent oversight," blaming an incorrect access number. The Associated Press asked a federal judge this month to order the Pentagon to turn over a copy of the pay records. The AP sued under the Freedom of Information Act to obtain the records from a Texas state library records center.AP reported there also are allegations that potentially embarrassing material was removed from Bush's military file in 1997, when he was running for re-election as Texas governor.Critics have questioned whether Bush fulfilled his service responsibility when he was with the Texas Air National Guard.
