The Democratic state treasurer's race is tightening in the final days before the primary.

The latest poll has Steve Murphy ahead of Steve Grossman, but only by a few points.

Grossman is banking on a big voter turnout in Quincy next week because of the wide open congressional race. Murphy is counting on the Democratic machine, which relies heavily on the senior citizen vote.

Grossman, owner of an envelope business that his grandfather started, is outspending Murphy 3 to 1.

"I'm the only person who wasn't born with a silver spoon in his mouth in this fight. I'm running against the trust fund kids," Murphy said.

Murphy, a Boston city councilor with close ties to Beacon Hill, was also referring to uncontested Republican Karyn Polito.

The latest polls show Murphy slightly ahead. The undecided vote, however, is more than 50 percent.

"There's no one more inside that Steve Grossman. He's never been elected, although he's tried, but he's been appointed to everything. He's kind of bought his way into every position he's had," Murphy said.

As the former chairman of the Democratic National and State committees, Grossman isn't afraid to make use of coat tails.

"Bill Clinton made me chairman of the Democratic National Committee. Bill Clinton created, by the way, 22 million jobs or helped create them during eight years," he said.

As a former gubernatorial candidate, Grossman said his decades of running the small, family business is his resume.

"That's how I see the job. That's what I've done with my life. That's what I've done in business every day," Grossman said.

But Murphy argued it's the middle class that needs to be bailed out and he's the middle class candidate in this race.
