Former President Bill Clinton took time out from his father-of-the-bride duties on Thursday to try to help fellow Democrat Rep. Stephen Lynch's re-election bid in Boston.

"I actually like politics. I like that it's a contact sport, and I don't understand why people whine about when there's a fight involved. It's kind of like you want to play quarterback for the NFL, put your pads on or stop complaining when they tackle you," Clinton said.

Clinton didn’t mention the Saturday wedding of his daughter, Chelsea, during his 30-minute speech. But on his way out, some supporters managed to get in some questions.

"I said, 'Have a good time this weekend as the father-of-the-bride, and God bless the whole family,'" one supporter said. "'He said, 'Thanks very much.'"

Clinton shook hands and took pictures with a few Bostonians, and many people pumped him for clues on the ceremony.

"I said, 'I know what Hillary's wearing. I know what Chelsea's wearing. What are you wearing?' And he said, 'Whatever they tell me!'" another supporter said.

The former president even autographed a woman's license as she congratulated him on the big day.

"He said, 'Yeah, I'm very excited,'" she said.

Chelsea Clinton will marry investment banker Marc Mezvinsky in New York on Saturday.
