DERRY, N.H. -- On Thursday, Democrat presidential contenders John Kerry and Howard Dean continued their criticism of President George W. Bush and his claim Iraq attempted to buy uranium from Africa.
Newscenter 5's Janet Wu reported that while campaigning in New Hampshire, former Vermont Gov. Dean openly questioned the president's truthfulness and said that those who knew this was a false statement should resign. The former Vermont governor could only dream about intense press coverage just a month ago. On Thursday, a small army of staffers handled the legion of reporters following him. Dean took advantage of the spotlight to launch another attack on the White House, citing published reports that indicated Bush should have known more than a year ago that Iraq wasn't likely buying uranium from Africa.Dean said the issue puts the country's credibility is at stake."I would hope the president did not deliberately lie to the American people. There is no way of knowing without an independent investigation. What we do know is that the president gave information that many people in his government knew was false -- the office of the vice president, the office of the secretary of state and the CIA," Dean said.Even with all this media attention, Dean insisted he doesn't know about any opposition research conducted by Democratic opponents. The conservative journal the American Spectator claimined Kerry is looking for dirt on Dean and his wife, both physicians."I'm saying no comment on the reports from the American Spectator as I would on the National Enquirer," said Dean.He also answered the Spectator's claim that Dean won't say if he has ever performed an abortion."I did not perform abortions. I'm a medical doctor. Nor did my wife," Dean said. But Dean admitted they all keep tabs on him since he raised $7.5 million over the last three months."I'm sure they're all watching carefully," Dean said.
