Sen.-elect Scott Brown wants to be sworn in immediately, not next week as originally planned.

An attorney for the Brown campaign sent a letter to Gov. Deval Patrick and Secretary of State William Galvin on Wednesday asking that the Jan. 19 election results be certified by 11 a.m. Thursday, so that he can be sworn in by Vice President Joe Biden later in the day.

"As he is the duly elected United States senator from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, he is entitled to be seated now," Brown campaign counsel Daniel Winslow said in the letter.

The letter also said that Brown wants to participate in several important votes that are scheduled for next week. Brown was originally scheduled to be sworn in on Thursday, Feb. 11.

"(Brown) has been advised that there are a number of votes scheduled prior to that date. For that reason, he wants certification to occur immediately," the letter said.

Patrick's office said the Governor's Council should certify the election at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, so Brown should get a letter of certification by 11 a.m.

A spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said officials will aim to swear in Brown on Thursday afternoon.

Brown defeated Democrat Martha Coakley to win a Senate seat held by the late Edward Kennedy for over a half-century.
