Thanksgiving is a week away, but lawmakers on Beacon Hill won't be doing any official business until January.

Just before adjourning, they passed a budget cutting nearly $500 million from the budget, but Gov. Deval Patrick says, that's not enough.

NewsCenter 5's Janet Wu reported that Gov. Deval Patrick was miffed Thursday at legislative leaders for not giving him special budget cutting powers to close the remaining deficit.

He's irritated at the House for refusing to pass an education bill with $250 million in federal grants at stake.

"I think the speaker's remarks are about finishing when they come back from their six- or seven-week break -- pardon the edge in my voice," Patrick said.

"The deadline on the application is the middle of January, so we have plenty of time to get it past and be in contention for the federal funds," Rep. Steven Panagiotakos said.

"We're not going to rush into it. If we're not on his timetable, so be it. We're going to get the job done. We're going to take our time to look at it thoroughly," Rep. Charlie Murphy said.

While a few lobbyists were still roaming the hallway, there was a big echo on Beacon Hill Thursday. Part of the holdup on the education bill are lobbyists for the teacher's unions who are not happy with raising the cap on charter schools. As for the budget, legislators rejected the governor's attempt to slash their accounts.

"I don't understand what's magic about adjourning now for six or seven weeks. As I say, the working families out there, the students out there stuck in the achievement gap, they don't get to wait six or seven weeks," Patrick said.

"That's not terribly accurate, number one. This building is not going to close. I'm going to be in this building for 80 hours a week like I am every other week," Murphy said.

"He knows how frustrated I am that the House has not taken up education reform or the crime package and not really dealt with the tools I need to manage this budget," Patrick said.
