Statement: Wilkerson Responds To Call For Resignation

POSTED: 9:07 pm EDT October 30, 2008

This statement was issued Thursday night by Dianne Wilkerson's campaign office:

State Sen. Dianne Wilkerson, who is running a write-in/sticker campaign, maintains that she is enormously respectful of the decisions and recommendations made by the senate body today.

“There are many moving parts to this situation and I’m extremely focused on processing all of the considerations at hand,” said Wilkerson.

The Boston Democrat stated that the senate’s request for her to resign today is unreasonable.

“Surely the members of the state senate could not have believed that such a monumental decision would be made within a few hours,” said Wilkerson. “A decision like this could be comforting to some but could prove disastrous to others.”

“This district is more dependent on government working for it than any other. Constituent calls continue unabated even through this week. As a case in point, a call came in this week from a family that lost a child to violence that is seeking help raising money for that child’s funeral,” said Wilkerson.

“A decision to leave this district without representation, even for 60 days, is one that cannot and should not be made in a matter of hours,” said Wilkerson. “Rest assured I am committed to do what is in the best interest of the residents of this district.”
