BOSTON -- Mayor Thomas M. Menino is recovering after undergoing an arthroscopic procedure on his knee Friday.

Thomas S. Thornhill, M.D., Chairman of Orthopedic Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Scott D. Martin, MD both performed the procedure at the Faulkner Hospital in Jamaica Plain.

"The mayor's procedure went well, as expected, lasting less than an hour," the doctors said in a statement. "We recommend the mayor stay off his feet for a few days to keep any swelling down."

The surgery repaired cartilage the mayor tore during the Red Sox World Series rally last year. Menino stumbled walking down stairs while carrying the championship trophy.

During the procedure, the surgeons found two cartilage tears, and the torn cartilage was removed.

"The staff at the Faulkner Hospital and my doctors did a tremendous job," Menino said. "I want to thank everyone for all of the well wishes and assure them that I will be up and around in no time."

Menino will return to work as soon as possible and start physical therapy next week, according to his office.
