The Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway, a series of parks which links Boston’s seaport to the North End and Chinatown, was praised by Caroline Kennedy as a testament to the city’s history of progressive stewardship.

“[Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy] taught us that the living legacy of Boston was constant innovation, accomplishment and daring,” Caroline Kennedy said. “She would be proud to see how that spirit endures in our time.”

Caroline Kennedy spoke during the inaugural ceremony for the Greenway, which was built on the site of a former elevated highway in the aftermath of the Big Dig.

The day-long celebration also featured activities across the city, including morning Yoga in the Wharf district, sun gazing in Christopher Columbus Park, Chinatown tours, and a produce market in Dewey Square.

Eunice Kennedy Shriver, one of Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy’s nine children, also attended the opening and the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Greenway Mothers’ Walk.

Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy did not make an appearance at the event, following a recent hospital stay.
