BOSTON -- The two major-party candidates for governor are in a dead heat with less than a week to go before the election.
NewsCenter 5's Jim Boyd reported that the Boston Globe/WBZ poll showed that Democrat Shannon O'Brien has 41 percent of the vote over Republican Mitt Romney's 40 percent. With a 5 percent margin of error, the race is a virtual tie.Five percent of those polled said they were undecided. The two candidates are hitting the campaign trail in the last few days before Tuesday's vote. Backed by more than 100 women in front of the Statehouse Thursday, O'Brien said that she can be a more effective leader on Beacon Hill."I know how to get things done on Beacon Hill," O'Brien said. "I know how to break through the gridlock in the Legislature, in the House and the Senate. I know how to do things differently."Romney said that giving O'Brien control of the corner office would give the Democrats a stranglehold on Beacon Hill. The Republican candidate said that would be disastrous for the state and for business."If you had a gang of three running things on Beacon Hill -- raising taxes with impunity, extending patronage -- you're going to watch employers run for the border," Romney said.On the final weekend before the election, Romney plans to tour the state by bus, campaigning in as many of the 351 cities and towns as possible. O'Brien will also crisscross the state with Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy and Sen. John Kerry.
