Sen. Edward Kennedy will remain in the hospital for a few more days before returning to Cape Cod after suffering a seizure over the weekend, Kennedy spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter said late Monday.

The 76-year-old senator was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital on Saturday. The senator's wife, Vicki Kennedy, arrived at the hospital shortly before 10 a.m. Monday. Officials said that he became ill after walking his dogs.

Cutter said that the senator will return to the Cape before he resumes work in the Senate.

Earlier Monday, Vicki Kennedy said that she was worried that her husband's long hours on Capitol Hill and campaigning for Sen. Barack Obama may be affecting his health.

Vicki's father, Edmund Reggie, told the Boston Herald that, "(She) was concerned. He works too hard. He works too long."

The senator's doctors said that they want him to rest comfortably while they try to figure out why he suffered a seizure. Doctors performed more tests on Monday, but his spokeswoman said it's unclear when doctors would release more information on his condition.

Kennedy's press secretary said that Kennedy was surrounded by family and his staff. Well wishers have been sending a steady stream of flowers to the hospital.

"They are very optimistic about his recovery, and we are all wishing him well and praying for him and hoping that all of the tests come out in his favor," Rep. Sal DiMasi said.

"Obviously like everyone here, and people all across the commonwealth and across the country, we are concerned about the senator's health and praying for his speedy recovery, which by all accounts will be complete," Gov. Deval Patrick said.

Sources said that the senior senator is energetic and eager to get back home and back to work.

"Anyone who knows Sen. Kennedy and his tremendous work ethic knows that no one is more eager to get back to work than Sen. Kennedy," Sen. Harry Reid said. "So to my good friend, the senator from Massachusetts, I say rest, get well. All of your friends and colleagues in the Senate wish you the very best and look forward to your quick return because there is a lot we are depending on you to do."

On Sunday, he spent much of the day with family -- eating, watching movies and the Red Sox and Celtics games.

Obama spoke briefly with his mentor by phone and said he sounded like the "same old Ted."

"I suspect he'll be back on the Senate floor immediately to do the people's business," Obama said.
